I may have the opportunity to move there for a couple of years.
Anyone on here know anything about the place?

I was there for a couple of days earlier this year - there doesn't seem to be a huge amount to it, to be honest. But then I spent most of the time drinking far too much lager on 4th (which was quite an intersting street if you like little shops and a somewhat fruitless attempt to retain the hippy vibe).

One thing it has going for it, is it isn't Phoenix.

Do you like bloody hot weather?

There are still a lot of people who wear dodgy levi's and ten gallon hats.

Me, personally, I could never live anywhere where it was acceptable for middle aged men to wear denim shorts.

Quiet out of the way large town in Az. Hot in the summer, perfect temperature in winter.

Worth visiting Tombstone down the road, and as stated, the aircraft graveyard is there.

Lots of retired people - bit like Eastbourne, but in the desert.

Nothing wrong with it, just not lively.

Nope, but close to the Mexican border, and all that brings...

Don't bother visiting Nogales, it just isn't worth it...

Been there in that area a few times. I usually stay at Vantana Canyon resort.

The boneyard at Davis Monthan is definately worth a visit.

Actually quite a lot to do in the area if you look, hence why I go back a lot.

As a place to live for a few years, you could do worse. I guarantee you'll save a bundle of money, as the cost of living is seriously cheap there.

Southern AZ is arid, but safe and cheap. Easy access to LA and Vegas and a short drive up to Pheonix/Scottsdale/Mesa which is a little more lively - and in part, ultra-swanky.
I'd move to Arizona, given the choice, just to escape the humidity/hurricanes. Cars don't rot. Crime is minimal. Skin cancer is the state industry. Factor 50, nothing less.

Turn on your Oven. Climb inside it.

That'll give you an idea. I've been there, nice, but summer temps of 45c are not at all uncommon, normal high temps in the summer can be 37-38c. That's VERY hot. Also, it isn't that dry in the summer, they get what they call the Monsoon season where there can be localized flooding. On the plus side, the landscape is not bad, the city is set next to a very picturesque mountain range and it doesn't snow or ever get very cold there.

But the lack of snow and an overall dry climate means that you'll see 20-30 year old cars with rot free bodies.

Places like LA and Vegas are close by in the American sense of things, LA is about a 7 hour drive from Tucson if I remember right.. took about 5 and a half hours to get to Phoenix from LA. It's the American west, Cities are VERY far apart and there's not much between them. Arizona itself is probably 20% larger in size than the whole UK and has probably 1/10th the population.

That's brilliant, good luck to the lad.

If you go, and like either the great outdoors or any sort of shooting sport, you can't go wrong.

Airplane graveyard (Aircraft Maintenance And Reclaimation Center--AMARC) is amazing! Well worth it. You can only take a bus tour through there, but that's perfect as it's HUGE. Next door is an amazing airplane museum. Fantastic place, worth at least two days if you are an aviation buff.

Rest of Tucson is completely useless.

ASU is a good University for sports so I've heard.

Ignore what you hear about the weather, you'll acclimatise soon enough, and not having to worry about how many layers to wear is a refreshing change.

Scottsdale is very trendy, and you are quite close to a lot of amazing places - Grand Canyon, Sedona etc.

The people are friendly, and have adapted to the weather - for example play golf at 6am, go to work, and then have dinner outside in the evening.

What sport(s) is your son elite at if you don't mind me asking?
