I'm planning a day trip to the lakes this weekend, looking for ideas where we can go, this will be over the bank holiday so some ideas that minimise traffic would be good.

Ideally looking for nice scenery, nice place to go for a walk but not a massive hike! with nice views, pubs, lakes, maybe a boat trip etc.

Any suggestions, i was thinking of Ullswater area, any good places you guys and girls can think of? is there any good walks around Ullswater, couple of hrs walk ect (not 8hrs)

Thanks, nice driving roads considered to be a bonus!!

Avoid a lot of traffic by driving to Haverthwaite, getting the steam train ( http://www.lakesiderailway.co.uk/index.php ) to Lakeside ( good aquarium there ) and then ferry to Bowness

I live pretty close to the Lake District. I would avoid the whole place like the plague this weekend, it'll be too busy to be enjoyable.

Do you have a Helicopter?

The whole place will be teeming with coaches and caravaners.. You have ZERO chance of any nice driving...

If I still lived in Windermere, I'd either be going away this weekend or planning not to leave the house.

Unless you're willing to get there for 6am, enjoy a decent walk and then get the hell out of there by 11, the roads will be like central London, the fells like a tube station escalator and, knowing this county on bank holidays, f*cking cold and wet.

Assuming you do want to be in the Lakes for BH weekend, I'd do this:
  • VERY EARLY drive to Windermere
  • Take the Kirkstone Pass over to Patterdale and Ullswater
  • Park in Glenridding.
  • Take the lake steamer from Glenridding to Howtown.
  • Walk along the shore of Ullswater back to Glenridding.
  • Late Lunch in Glenridding.
  • Then my route home would be to get onto the A6 near Penrith and blast south down that to Kendal for the fun driving.

Cool that sounds good, Windermere i was going to avoid due to bad traffic but by the sounds of it i best avoid the whole place. Im going to still go for it i think, i was also condidering camping (Side farm on Ullswater, im worried it might be full tho) we will see!!

Thanks again

There's a good campsite further up Patterdale by Brotherswater: www.sykeside.co.uk if Side Farm is full, it's also got a good pub there (The Brotherswater Inn). Plenty of other low-level walks available in Patterdale too.

I always liked trekking up Cat Bells next to Derwent Water. Short hike, but enough to break a sweat. Great views.

I'm affraid I will be one of those causing the traffic jams, as the wife has booked us a classic vw camper van for the weekend. So no doubt, will be breaking down all over the place.... Especially near Ullswater, as that's where we are parking up at night.

So if your stuck behind me, I appologise in advance.!!!! If you see a vw camper van broken down, stop and say hello.

Has to be the north lakes to avoid the majority of the tourists & traffic. Head for Cockermouth and go from there.

Good walk around Ennerdale (an easy hour and a half) with a pub at the end! Cat bells is a good shout too. For something a little more adventurous there is the ridge walk along Blencathra (saddleback).

Newlands and Honister passes for driving!

Avoid Ullswater like the plague!

+1

It's a noddy hike, but we like doing Cat Bells, then onto Maiden Moor and High Spy then down the side of the quarry and along the Derwentwater banks.

We usually go for Helvellyn and Striding Edge on the last day if the weather's nice.

+1 yes Used to live in Bowness - BH would either be stay at home and BBQ or on the boat with a few beers

I haven't been for a few years but the Drunken Duck has good food, although BH usually meant it was rammed - folk would travel for miles.

If it's still there, a decent campsite was at Eskdale Green... one of the few places where real camp fires are permitted. Ok pub within staggering distance too.

Enjoy smile
