Evening all

I'm after a bit of advice from the travelers among you. It's my dads 60th next June and we are going on a family holiday, there will be my mum and dad; myself and my wife; my brother and his wife and my younger brother. We are expecting our first baby in 5 weeks and may or may not bring our new addition. It will most likely be our last time to get away together and want to make it special.

I've been trying to thing of a place we can all head to for 1 week, preferable warm in August 2009. The only problem is that all of us are fairly well traveled and I can't really think of anywhere different to go. My parents are retired and are always on holiday so the week away will be one to spend some quality time together.

Ideally the flight isn't to be over 5 or 6 hours as we are only away for the week. I've been looking at the south of Florida but we been there a few times, Maldives etc is too far away, Dubai doesn't really appeal but none of us has been. Pulled out a map of the world and thought of Corsica or Sicily again none of us has been. We don't mind if we hotel (4 or 5 star)it or rent a villa (4 bed).

So has anyone got some suggestions, budget wise I guess we are talking £1500 per head.

Thanks in anticipation!

Xlendi Bay, Gozo (try the St Patrick Hotel)

If you like watersports - including diving and watersurfing -
The coast of southern Finland, particularly the Turku archipelago and Aland islands
e.g. http://www.visitfinland.com/w5/index.nsf/(pages)/S...
(not been myself - we always went to the lake district, but we'd get the ferry past on they way from Sweden and it's beautiful)

Corsica is absolutely beautiful, lots of small villas, no big hotels because the locals blow up anything they don't like (really). Rent a car, visit some of the best beaches and most stunning mountains in the world.

scratchchin Rereading that, I could do copywriting for Thomas Cook.....

Thanks guys. I like the look at Hilton Head especially with the way the dollar is.

Montenergo is an interesting choice although my parents have already been to Barbados. Will take a look at Finland as well.

Agree - google Sveti Stefan - stunning location and what was formerly a run down hotel is being/has been redeveloped.

I live there, what sort of holiday are you looking for ? Its VERY expensive here - about 150-200GBP a night per standard room for a hotel, less for a B&B...The beaches ARE fantastic though, and the sea at that time of Year (Aug) will be around 29/30C (like a nice warm bath)

Its expensive (Did I mention that ?) and if I'm honest, you'll get better value further south (Turks, Cayman, Barbados, BVI....) But I've not visited an Island as pretty as Bermuda yet. If there are a few of you - I'd go onto VRBO
www.vrbo.com and pick a Villa big enough for all of you on an Island of your choice. That's what we do.

Oh and PS - avoid Providenciales in T&C.... its beautiful, but there is the sum total of Sweet FA to do there - unless you dive, and the diving's much better here for wreck dives or Cayman for wall diving

PM me if you need advice about coming here though, as if you do decide to you'll enjoy it, I'm probably a little jaded after 8 years here - especially if you come the first weekend in Aug when Cup Match is on (the whole island shuts down for 2 days for a cricket match biggrin)

Apologies for the resurection but I've just returned from Montenegro and have to agree with the comments above.

It is a beautiful and unspoilt country with mountains, the second biggest canyon in the world, huge lakes, 4 national parks, crystal blue sea, historic towns/castles and Sveti Stefan has a beautiful hotel covering what seems to be an island but isn't as it has a narrow path from the mainland.

Stayed in Budva as Sveti Stefan was closed. Every other car seemed to be a Porsche, Maseratti or something of similar stature.

The only way I can sum up Budva is to say it was Monaco would be like if it was a historic Italian town.
