Mrs Goingonholiday and I have a weekend in London coming up. We're thinking of a meal at Hawksmoor Air St followed by cocktails. Any recommendations for a cocktail bar or a rooftop bar nearby?

Mr. Foggs is pretty good, plenty of locations.

The Donovan Bar is nearby for classic London hotel bar vibes and amazing cocktails. Home of Salvatore Calabrese, a legend who invented the Breakfast Martini.

We love the Duck & Waffle cocktail bar, 40th floor of 110 Bishopsgate (near Liverpool St) - time it for sunset and it's amazing.

The Hawksmoor in Covent Garden has a much nicer atmosphere. It's called Hawksmoor Seven Dials, in Langley St.

You could enjoy a cocktail in the American bar at The Savoy (not rooftop) and then walk up there.

On Saturday I was around Old Street. Had 2 4 1 cocktails in a place called Old Street records which was decent value and a good range. Had a decent band on too.

After we went to Swift, which was a jump in cost but also quality, some of the best I've had in a long time. Had an Irish coffee at one point, on the recommendation of the barman and it was amazing.

I got asked this so many times, I hosted it on a webpage.

Biased towards the Negroni, but they are all fabulous cocktail bars: https://garychaplin.com/lifestyle-main/crimson-pur...

My favourites are:

Mr Foggs Apothecary on Brook Street in Mayfair (other locations available, but of the ones I've been to this is by far my favourite)
Duck and Waffle, Bishopsgate

I suppose I should thank you but you've added at least 18 nights out to my future plans now laugh

Another suggestion for you - Bar Americain, downstairs at Brasserie Zedel in Soho, lovely old Art Deco cocktail bar with old-fashioned good service too.

Foggs are superb. Worth booking if you want to go downstairs into the "secret" gin bar (Tott Court Road). They do an amazing white Negroni.

If you want to go upmarket, you can't beat The Wolseley, though you might be standing.
Also Pont De La Tour at the bar (tower bridge, south side) - easy to sit at the bar.

Hawksmoor Covent Garden - bugger me it was deafening on a busy night. Wood floor, brick low vaulted ceilings - lots of groups of very loud "hoo-rahs". It ruined it for us. We literally had to ask the waiter to repeat everything - just could not hear.

Goodmans Mayfair - best ever rib of beef on the bone.

Like it.

Rather worryingly there's only one of your Manchester/M60 recommendations that I've not been to!! You should pay a visit to Sterling in Manchester, second site of the Schofield brothers, and definitely worthy of your list. Mrs JQ & I prefer it to Schofield's as we feel it it has more atmosphere. Also, we were in 10 Tib Lane a couple of weeks ago and our host was raving about Posie, their new venture. We've not made it there yet, feels like we'll have to pay it a visit and report back.

Not been to either of those yet, don't get into Manchester very often (by design wink ). Had planned to go to Sterling a few months ago, but the 'blue' friend refused due to the Neville connection!!

Definitely address that over the next couple of months though wink

I enjoyed Zedel and Bar Americain too. Automatic welcome drinks never fail to win me over.

Nobody's mentioned Cahoots yet - really like that place.

If you end up in Covent Garden, Nellies (under Simpsons on the Strand) is excellent. The Clement opposite Temple tube has a rooftop bar which is supposed to be excellent.

For a more speakeasy type affair try The Rabbits Hole in Clerkenwell or The Gobspy on Fenchurch Str (be brave - it really is there!).

Cahoots (one near Carnaby Str) is good fun for the atmosphere.

Hawksmoor itself does pretty good cocktails.

Dukes Hotel, Mayfair for the Martinis that inspired Ian Fleming for Bond.

Not cocktails, but if you like wine, candlelight & an atmosphere, Gordon’s Wine Bar is nearby.
