Use holiday rentals site, pick your car and company, take out annual rental excess protection insurance. Enjoy your trip.
You will be surprised how cheap you can rent in Ireland these days.
Ta. Are you referring to taking out a separate policy to that of the hire company? If so any recommendations? Thanks. You will be surprised how cheap you can rent in Ireland these days.

I've used EverSure ( https://www.eversure.com/excess/ ) before, but never had to claim. Well worth it if you are planning on renting cars for more than a couple of days a year.Venisonpie said:

You can get goid deals through Ryanair too, they match the other cheap agent sites.
I also find that telling them you have your own policy on collection, stops the chat and makes it easier on return.
I think a let's mug a punter scenario gets out of the head when it is an insurance company will be paying anyway.
Just my experience, never needed to claim and been doing it this way for years, so has wife.

Can recommend hiring through auto Europe as it's normally significantly cheaper than just going on the main brands websites. They occasionally have sales on too.

If you decline the insurance in Ireland it is general practice to put a crazy high hold on your credit card. Think thousands.
If you have card with 5k free, just use that for the rental only.
Last time I rented was a good few years ago and Hertz wanted "only" 1500 hold.
There is no rush releasing this hold either...
