Hi

Can anyone recommend a car hire company in Croatia, specifically Split airpor?

Reading the reviews on seemingly every company is a little scary. I do appreciate that only negative reviews are left but there is a constant theme of insurance upsell scams and damage costs, does anyone have a positive experience they can share?

Thanks, TT

I go to Croatia regularly for work (Zagreb mostly) and have used both Sixt and Avis.

If you have a credit card that offers full insurance coverage on rental cars when you pay using that card - I would always do that and take the minimal insurance.

Make sure you get one with an office in the terminal. Some say they do but actually don t enterprise/europcar/avis/sixt certainly do.

I ve always used enterprise there who have been decent enough

Also, get excess insurance in case - I use questor insurance who are cheap. I’ve claimed with them once as well and it was easy

We used Avia last year (through Economybookings) - they are just outside the terminal car park (an inconsequential stroll). They were by far the cheapest (£12 a day, 6 days). They did try and upsell their insurance, and they did lie and claim that my insurance would not cover breakdown recovery (it does), but, I'm used to the game the cheapies play, and it was all fine. Good car, no issues.

There was a family before us having a melt down as they ignored the fact they needed to bring a credit card, the one they hired the car with (for the deposit if using your own insurance) - but again, I see this often - just go in with your eyes open.

Or just pay more if you prefer. But they were fine.

Yes Avia are ok and just a short walk. But a tad irritating if you have lots of luggage. When I used them the cars weren’t great quality, but couldn’t argue for the price

Yes we used one at Zadar airport.
Our flight was delayed and even though they knew our flight number, they told us that all cars in that group had been hired out so could only upgrade (surprise, surprise!) - cost to upgrade was extortionate so we told them to stuff it (we hadn’t paid anything up front).
We weren’t the only ones in that position on our flight.
The car hire guy got really aggressive (terrible attitude with my wife who told her as the car was hired in my name to shut up).
Ended up going to another car hire desk who couldn’t have been nicer - it did cost more but not as much as the first company. Sorry can’t remember either name.
