2/3 Hours from Calais travelling South nice Dinner/Overnight

We do lots of French trips however nearly always ask on here for a bit of advice . Wedding anniversary in April and wife has said she does not want to fly anywhere right now , so just booked a tunnel trip again for a week in April. BTW great deals on at the moment cheapest we have booked in years . Some sort of promotion on right now .

We are not flash often uses Logis who have nice restaurants and reasonable accommodation .
It will be a Monday so that's more tricky in France .

Ideal would be to head South for two or three hours off train and stay somewhere where we can get a nice meal and stay .That night being our anniversary so I better find somewhere now . Night two will be Troyes but I don't really want to do it in one day .

Have you done something that you can recommend may fit the bill . Thank you

At a whisker under 3 hours away is Compiegne, lovely town. We stayed at Alfred Hotels on the riverside last year for a very reasonable price. It has a quaint underground car park, or there is street parking directly outside. The town centre is a short walk away and we ate at 2 places while we were there - La Brasserie Parisienne and Restaurant Compiegne Soprano both of which are (or were...) open on Monday nights.

Champagne region would be the obvious place to head for, especially if going on to Troyes.

Somewhere like Reims or Epernay?

Reims was going to be my suggestion for that side of france on the way towards Troyes

No specific hotel or restaurant recommendations as been a few years since I've used it but Saint-Quentin, 2hrs south from Calais is a nice little town with a number of restaurants in and around the old central square.

Took my wife to Giverny, Monet's house. Easy drive. If your wife likes art and gardens it's ideal.

3 hours from Calais, nice location for an anniversary, good restaurant (but need to check open Monday), reasonable price and not far from the obligatory photo spot for the road trip photo

OP here and thank you all for the suggestions. We have actually stayed at this Chateau and had a less than great experience , however I do appreciate your suggestion and clearly you had a good time .

I think we may try the place littleredrooster has posted for night one .

As mentioned above, Reims and Champagne are a good point to break. Former does have an emission zone, so make sure you have a sticker if entering the city. Personally I find Epernay a bit grim, other than the Champagne houses, as it is a fairly industrial town. Lots of lovely smaller hotels in the surrounding villages to consider.

I stayed in Pontavert a couple of years ago in Relais de Fleurette.
Great price, run by local farmer and his family and who makes his own champagne and a v tidy place indeed.
I'd definitely go back.
