Hi chaps,
Looks like the ideal spot for us, based on the abundance of gentle greens and the large waterpark for a non skiing teenager.
The one thing that puts me off is the ostentatiousness of the place and everything that comes with it.

Is there a way of staying somewhere a bit more normal but still getting the bubble up to 1850, so you do not have to stay right amongst it all?

1550 used to be the normal bit and it's directly below 1850 so there is a lift connecting them.

Few years since I've been though.

1650 is for the normies i.e. those who aren't Russian or the Dubai set.

1550 is where the cool kids hang out.

We use 1550 - the good thing being you get a nice run back to the chalet at the end of the day. It's just a bit more laid back.

The waterpark is at 1550 anyway. La Tania and Le Praz are pretty normal, Moriond is for the very elderly (although with a stupid long push if you're trying to get across it).

It's all interconnected in the same valley obviously, if the snow is good (not been good recently) then there is no downside to being lower.

Personally I find the very middle of 1850 around the main station quite staggeringly ugly and just looks like a 70s multistorey carpark, although should be fewer Russians stinking the place up.

I don't think the ostentation of 1850 is too upsetting really, if you're properly skiing then you'll just notice more of the latest posh equipment fads (gold helmets, those built in visor things, Lacroix skis etc.) and the occasional wally trying to drive a 458 around town.

Prices are crazy on the slopes, but can be avoided, unlike the Russians. We now stay over at St Martin, it’s a nice authentic village that hasn’t been over developed yet, takes about 40 mins to get to Courcheval but the Val Thorens side is decent skiing.

We always stay in La Tania, great little village with easy access into everything, couple of nice bars/supermarket etc. everything you need.

Another vote for La Tania, it's a great little place and has all the amenities you'll need. Skiing back late afternoon can be challenging because the two runs that take you back to the village can get icy but you can always take the lift down from Bouc Blanc.

5 minute drive down to Le Praz and jump in the lift to go up to 1850. It runs from around 0730 until about midnight if I remember correctly. Coming back from 1850 in the dark on the lift is pretty spectacular, looking over the valley.

1850 is great for finishing your day, late lunch (Le Tremplin is my favourite), bit of apres and then a taxi back to La Tania. Perfect day.

La Porteta in 1650 is great hotel and perfect location for everything. Part of The Pig group of UK hotels. Only have rooms by the week, and unlikely to find anything for 2026 season, but you might be lucky. If not book for 2027!

1650 for a decent few bars, restaurants etc.

Been our go to for many years now.
