Mrs WD fancies a break in Langkawi next April as she was reading an article about someone who retired from the UK and moved there, I know nothing about the area but have been to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur on business many years ago. Any recommendations regarding 4* accommodation and preferred areas of Langkawi would be appreciated and would 15 days be too long in one place?
Pelangi Resort is good as it is on the beach and has a choice of pools and restaurants so you can be self contained if that's your thing. Very relaxing. But it's also right next to Cenang with a wide choice of local bars and restaurants on the beach or the main drag. If you then get into the back streets there are the shack type places where the locals eat and you can get delicious fresh food at ridiculously low prices. We don't like being stuck in a resort and much prefer eating in local places so this worked well for us as it is all walkable.
Most of the other resorts are a bit remote so if you want to get out you are looking at drving or getting a taxi. Grab (asian Uber equivalent) is very cheap and convenient so transport cost isn't an issue but it does make it a bit less convenient if you need a 15 minute drive each way every time you want to go out in the evening.
You can hire good quality 150cc mopeds for about £10 a day if you want to go out and about exploring the island. In 2 days you could see most of the island sights. The 7 Wells waterfalls are worth a visit / swim. If you like golf the Els Datai course is excellent.
Whether 15 days is too long or not depends on what you like doing. Some people can spend 2 weeks sat in an all inclusive resort but that would drive me nuts. 8 days was about right for us - 5 days of just switching off by the pool and beach, eating and drinking, split up with 2 days exploring and a day playing golf.
Langkawi is great value and didn't feel too touristy - it's easy to find genuine local food. It's a place where Malaysians from the cities go for their holidays. Highly recommended.

Another recommendation for the Pelangi Resort.
Although it is a fair few years since we were there.
We had four nights in Singapore and seven nights in Langkawi.
We stayed in one of the wooden chalets near the beach. Shared our accomodation with a few lizards.
We went a couple of years after the tsunami and got an amazing deal. Some signs were still evident and we got spooked and day when they tested the alarm warning.
We fancied a return trip recently, but were floored by the prices. Probably worth it though.
We were half board and I remember the breakfasts being amazing. So much variety.
It is multi cultural and I remember being slightly irked by one group who regularly filled their table from the breakfast buffet and only eat some of what they took from the buffet. We got chatting to one of the waitresses who mentioned that it was a common thing with a certain set.

We've been to the Casa Del Mar a couple of times which is right on Pantai Cenang beach. We like the hotel and the location is great for walking down the beach or the beach road to a good choice of restaurants. It's about to get renovated in Spring next year which should make it even better.
It's right next door to Pelangi resort!
