Any suggestions for decent car hire companies on the airport or short shuttle? I need an automatic car for about 11 days. Personal recommendations greatly received.

We hire lots of cars and recently hired from Milan Malpensa. My standard go-to now is the one car hire firm that everyone says you should never use - Goldcar... There is a method to the madness.

Goldcar are notorious for screwing people who do not have their insurance, so the simple solution is to book and take their insurance.

If you do the above, you get a car that is cheaper to rent than any of the others (would insurance included), is 'in terminal' so no shuttle busses (unless between terminals), and where you can use their 'key & go' system to simply pick up the keys and go.

We ended up with a new MG SUV thingy with an auto box and it cost buttons. It had a few scratches and dings, but again, it didn't matter as we had their full package of insurance, so when we dropped the car back, they just walked around the car and signed it off. Try doing the same with third party insurance!

Going back for Milan Malpensa in general, be aware that if you are returning from the north, the highway back to the airport is toll, but with online payment only. This is a real pain in the butt as you need to register online and wait until the next day for your trip to appear, after which you can find yourself, indicate that you are using a hire car and pay your toll. If you don't, the hire car companies will surely charge you a handsome 'service charge' at a later date. The hire car we used had quite a lot of outstanding toll charges for the previous few days, so clearly most people forget.

I have used Goldcar before in Spain so thats a good call. The other company that comes up a lot and appears to get reviewed well is AutoUnion, any view on them?

Do you still have to take your life in your hand crossing the entrance/exit road from the terminal to the hire car centre?

Man that taught you to duck n dive proper Dodgeball style. More like real life Frogger actually !

Don't think so - IIRC when I dropped the car off we had to walk to the entrance, under cover, past the train station and in to T1, though this was for a different car hire company.

Linate is far more entertaining up lifts across carparks down lifts great fun with sets of skis.

From MXP a few years back with no issues, would use them again.
