Chile in September
Discussion
Yes folks, the newest random destination is upon us, courtesy of “need to use this companion voucher” and fairly patchy availability!
So, we’re going Business there and back with BA/Iberia… first time which will be nice. We have just 2 weeks as partner’s leave bank is bare. Annoyingly this uses loads of my leave due to shifts!
Gather this is shoulder season so might be a bit early for Torres del Paine…however any ideas for other places? I’ve been to Chile a few times and fancied Chiloe or some of the Lake District… or Atacama?
Popping over to Mendoza for a few days also a possible, but probably not top of the list…

If you don’t feel you have time for Mendoza just rent a car and head just down the road from Santiago to Santa Cruz, it has some of the best vineyards I’ve ever visited and I’ve visited a fair few. Viña Montes and Clos Apalta would be my two key picks with lunch at the former in Fuegos. Viña Viu Manet is also a nice spot with a cafe and a horse drawn carriage tour of the vineyard, start your day there. On the drive to/from Santiago stop at Viña Vik for lunch, it’s like a bond villains hideout, so cool, I believe you can stay there for ££££. You can also tour quite a few vineyards from Santiago itself if you like. If you prefer whites or sparkling then head west from the city to Casablanca. It’s on the way to Valparaiso which feels like a slightly more dangerous version of Brighton, I really liked it though, very edgy. Google it before you commit, it’s likely not for everyone.
We did Torres Del Paine in November so I can’t comment on heading down there in September but I believe the trekking season starts around then. I would gladly do the W trek again but it’s quite time consuming. If you’ve only got a couple of weeks I’d probably stay up north and save it for another time. You could fly in and fly out just doing a quick hike up to the towers but honestly they’re the least impressive part of that hike even if the most photographed.
I loved the Atacama. We stayed in San Pedro de Atacama as most people do. Rented a 4x4 pretty cheaply and drove to all the usual sights. If you need any recommendations there for stuff to see let me know. One of the most unexpected was the Puritama natural springs, there is a little bit of water there! Plenty of flamingoes too.

Good shout. Thanks, think we will concentrate on the north. Never thought about wine tours, that’s an excellent idea too.
Not too set on TdP, did the W trek a while back and am not sure my partner is up to it, particularly if weather questionable.
I visited Valparaiso a while back, wasn’t that keen, although possibly had got my fill of ‘gritty’ through living in BA for a couple of months!
