Going for the first time later in the year, thinking a car will be good to explore. Any recommendations or any to avoid?

Doesn't look like the town streets are great for parking, am I mad to bother with a car?

we went last year and its a great (fun and mad) place to drive around!

We hired through Enterprise ( we had a Citroen C3 I think ) and they were great, no issues at all with unknown charges... unlike the other booths there was no queue when we picked up. I think there were two other franchises run out of the same office

EDIT : Car is a must if you want to explore Gozo too

We hired a Hyundai i10 when there in November. It was very cheap - think about £8 for the whole week as an upgrade from the transfer bus from the airport to Sliema. Parking for the week at our hotel was easy but far more expensive than the hire. It was useful though; I like the buses but getting to some parts of the island takes a long time by bus and you can't just stop if you spot something you want to see. We did end up leaving it parked for half the week at least, though, because driving from Sliema to Valetta would have been utterly pointless; Bolt taxis are cheap enough.

Ours came from Hertz who were fine, but all the hire places at the airport are next to each other so I bet they can be played off against each other.

I've only rented for a single day when I've had an evening flight and had to check out of the hotel in the morning.

You can then blat around a few of the rural sites more easily than getting the bus or worrying about having to leave your luggage somewhere.

I just rented with Avis at the airport, mainly because I could get a cheap rate via BA, I am already in their loyalty scheme and saves renting from some random local firm.

I've visited Gozo via public transport so it is not totally off limits without a car.

I'm not sure I'd want to get a car for the whole trip unless there was some mobility issue stopping you using the buses.

Plenty of Ubers/Bolts/etc. and distances are small so journeys are usually cheap.

Parking in any of the urban areas seems terrible as well.
