Edinburgh Midweek Break

We’re planning a 3 or 4 night break here in September and need a midrange hotel or good B&B, 2 rooms.
Last year we travelled up by car and stayed at the Dalmahoy on the southern outskirts. It was fine but we’re using the train this time so want to be reasonably central. Any recommendations please?

We used the Premier Inn at Leith.
It is a five minute walk to the tram station and it is possible to buy a three or four day ticket from memory.
Nice fish and chip restaurant near the front at Leith as well.
Must admit, we took the tram to the Wetherspoons (The Foot of the Walk) for breakfast as it was a fraction of the £11 per person Premier Inn wanted.

Have a look at the usual hotel sites before diving in & booking a Premier Inn, I was having a discussion with another PH’er earlier about the Edinburgh 5% tourist tax (this won’t affect you, it doesn’t start till 2026) and for some Saturday nights next month there was less than £1 of a difference between the central Premier Inns and the Radisson Blu or W hotel, amongst others.
There's a lot to choose from and others have suggested Premier Inns already but to throw another 2p in the hat the Edinburgh City Centre (Waverley) one is in a great location for the station (which I also park at when I drive instead if taking the train) and well positioned for the Royal Mile.
Standard Premier Inn stuff as you'd expect but a decent example.
We've done Airbnb a couple of times too (at different ends of the spectrum) this one was nice:

And we've stayed with Destiny Scotland right on the Royal Mile, again very pleasant and they have quite a few to choose from.

I really love Edinburgh, but on the cusp of being priced out of staying, even without the incoming tourist tax.
We’re in Aberdeen, and my Father priced a 4 night stay in Edinburgh vs Bergen and with all travel costs, it was cheaper to fly to Bergen and stay in an equivalent premier inn over there. Considering Norway is supposed to be expensive!
Anyway, back to recommendations- I agree PI at Leith is a good option.

Thanks all for your replies, plenty to have a look at. We rode through Grassmarket last year on a tour bus and it looked really lively, never really seen that area before.

Same here. There's a great range of dining options along the sea front, a lovely walk around the harbour, and a lovely bus ride / tram ride into the cenbtre of Edinburgh for not much money.It is a five minute walk to the tram station and it is possible to buy a three or four day ticket from memory.

To save starting a new thread…when we come on this break(not yet booked) our Swiss relatives want to have a day in Glasgow. I’ve been on business a few times many years ago but no recent experience. Any interesting suggestions to fill out a day there please? We’ll be doing the train from Edinburgh.

The Burrell Collection is amazing - I haven’t been since it reopened but it will be even better. Shopping in Princes Square is not as good as it was, but still quite fun. Take a ride on the Subway. Visit Byres Road in the West End. Find somewhere nice to eat in the Merchant City. Have tea at the Willow (Mackintosh tea rooms). That should keep you occupied for two days if you can squeeze another one in…w1bbles said:
