Gatwick now have a £6 charge for dropping off and picking up......is there a nearby spot where I can stand and get a mate to pick me up? ie walk up a road a bit or something........

Most airports these days have a free pick up and drop off in one of the further away car parks, I would imagine you could do this at Gatwick long stay (check for time limit!).

The person you are picking up would have to get the bus from the terminal.

Long Term Parking is free for 2 hours. I dropped my daughter there earlier this year then on pick up I parked and met her in arrivals so I could get her back to the car - as there are a lot of bus stops.

Let him park and text you the closest stop.

Alternatively [if timing is suitable] get a train to Three Bridges and get him to pick you up from there.
