We are travelling down to the Dordogne from Calais mid June on holiday mid June.

We fancy a stopover in or near or in Le Mans, has anyone got a nice hotel they can recommend? We had an absolute nightmare of a hovel 2 years ago with apparently great reviews, so would appreciate a decent recommendation with decent parking for my pride and joy. My wife is going to have to park in the same room as me however. smile

It's only a 1 night stay, but a decent restuarant in or nearby would be good.

Thanks

As a family of four, we stayed in the Ibis iirc and it had a swimming pool and was fine.

Hotel du France. You can sit a a table outside, consider and see a pic of Stirling Moss and Carol Shelby sitting at the same table. Great motorsport connections.

I looked at the Hotel de France, looks lovely, but fully booked for our night, week after the 24 Hueres. Shame.

Ah - that close to the race, you have no chance there, booked up by regulars, often see Derek Bell there a regular and has a suite named after him, and a couple of years ago met Jacky Ickx there.

French websites are crap, generally; worth noting however, that the Hotel de France is owned by Brits.

Yeah, they have gratuitously large garlicky escargot. It's worth mentioning that the local 'Loir' white wine is very good and inexpensive. Worth sourcing from the shop on the square.

Some nice little vineyards along the Petit Loir, did a day of stopping off at Degustation du Vin signs and trying different wines in sheds at various vinyards - however, in my experience the wine doesn't travel well. Eg its lovely on location and below average once it gets home.

For another option, for anyone else looking, we stayed here https://grand-hotel-chateau-du-loir.com/

very simple french hotel with the MOST fabulous food- and really very friendly staff.

Not ultra luxurious, but spotlessly clean, very easy to get to and perfect as a stop off on the way down. They also have family rooms with separate bedrooms and air conditioning- both were crucial for us!

did i mention the food was amazing......we spent two weeks in France and the food at that hotel was the best we had anywhere by some margin.

Staying there for this years Le mans

About 5 years ago they did the most awful burgers with the fashionable bread full of charcoal. Those were not great and I see are no longer on the menu!

It's a great little place - 40 min walk from our rural pad. The food is honest and tasty and you can push the boat out on the wine if you want to. They are very used to Brits (and Dutch) stopping by. There's quite a few Brits in the village that visit most evenings in the summer. A couple of other bars in the square if you want to move around.

We stayed there while house hunting, so it was 17 years ago - would be unfair to comment on the rooms hehe

The local white wine is called Jasnieres - it's dryish but really tasty. Shame you probably won't have time to visit a local cave to buy some!

Good to hear this, I've not been in for a while, when were you last there? Go to CdL every week for supermarket shop but it lacks restaurants compared to other local towns.

Bagnoles de l'Orne, Normandie is a posh village in a forest, built around a large lake with a large Casino located on the way down.

It is close-ish to Le Mans and I have stayed there a few times with Petrolhead groups.

The Hotels start with the spa Hotel du Beryl, but there are a few to chose from.

Its in the middle of nowhere, but very nice once you get there, as you can walk around everywhere and parking is easy.
