Looking at going soon, and organising myself a touch.

I've looked over previous threads here, but only found a couple of recommendations ref tour operators for going off the beaten track, but as the last thread i found was 3 years ago now, was wondering if there's anything more updated.

For example the Artic adventures operator was highlighted, but recent reviews are horrendous, so thats clearly off my list.

Only interested at this point in a winter holiday, and tour of the Ice caves/glaciers thats recommended please.

TIA

I always find Facebook groups the best resources for this kind of advice. There you'll find a much broader range of advice than PH can offer you.

I'd recommend that and planning your own trip entirely.

Thanks, I guess reading this back I should have said tour guides... as in an individual excursion type affair.

Flight/hotel/ hire car already in hand.

We hired a car, based out of Reykjavik and did our own stuff. First day headed to Vik, then stopped at a few places on the way back. Second day headed the other way, went through Thingvellier national park), lunch in Selfoss.
Last day picked up a few places on way to airport, Bridge between Continents, Brimtekill and Stampar craters etc.

There's a useful group on Facebook. Iceland tips for travellers

Notable places visited, Vik and the Lava Show, and the black sand beach. Seljelandfoss, Skogafoss, Faxi and Gullfoss waterfalls. Geysir, Hella. Kerid crater. Knarraros lighthouse and a cursory visit to Blue Lagoon gift shop. Oh and a night time wander around Reykjavik.

Reykavik airport has quite a large duty free on the way in - get yourelf whatever booze you want as you trip around (case of wine/beer etc). Alchohol prices are eye-watering.

We used these a few years ago

Went to places off the beaten track and we were lucky that there were only four of us in the group and the guide was brilliant. I personally wouldn’t get a car if it’s your first time as a decent guide enhances the tours with lots of info.
We used a guide on our second trip too but would consider a car (particularly in the summer).
