Big BMW fanboy, for my birthday me and Mrs Rockwell will be travelling to Munich for 4-5 days, see the BMW welt and explore that part of Germany however I need some advice as I havent driven out the country before.

I cant decide if I should drive my car there or fly there and rent a car. Having a car while im there is imperative. I want to explore bavaria behind the wheel of a BMW.

I'm not too bothered about cost as there's not that much of a difference

Cost summary for driving there. Euro tunnel, £200, petrol £400 for only the journey there and back (based on 300 miles off a full tank) hotel for 1 night stop off, £100

Cost summary for flying and renting. airport parking £60, flights £200, new M2 rental £600

What do you suggest? Is it a nice fun drive or is it just boring motorways

Thanks in advance

Depends on when you are looking to go really.

But the journey from the UK is boring as fk motorways. Unless you really want to drive the autobahn, I'd fly and rent.

Though when I drove back from Munich to frankfurt last December, the trees and scenery did look magical under all that snow they received. It was also -15 or 20

For a short trip like that, I’d fly.

I've done both ways. Usually drive, stop in baden-baden on the way there for breakfast in the morning at cafe konig (chocolatier.de) who invented the black forest gateaux.

One nice thing about renting is that the car will definitely have the right tyres.

Oh by the way, the Munich ring road is half underground (keeps going above and below ground). You might find using the built-in nav works best for that.

Done the drive quite a few times in the past - it can be fun (eg if you drive during the night and it is dry with little traffic), but it can also be mind numbingly boring (rain, traffic etc). 2 days easier than in one go, but both are doable

As much as I love driving, I would probably fly and rent a car ….

Ah crap - you just reminded me that I have no winter tyres - argh. Need to get that sorted very soon

Thanks all !

Mixed reaction's, I was edging towards driving beforehand and just needed somebody to fully convince me however now im thinking about flying.

One more thing, I intended to stop at the nurburgring, ask if that Misha fella from youtube to take my car round it as I dont have the minerals but then I remembered it might be very wet

hmmmmmmmm, i just dont know! Luckily its in December so have a while to decide.

The ring closes for tf usually mid November. It snows!

For me it would be fly and M2, unless of course you have something better to bring across.

600 for 4 days rental is pretty good value for an M2.

In that case i assume you are looking to go from Gatwick, i would suffer alot of hardships to not go there ever again. Plus the drive isnt bad, just a bit boring.
But while boring, driving on the continent, you get alot more mules under your belt than you might think, in comparison to the uk, its mostly a pleasure to drive there, apart from Belgium. Thats just a full on traffic jam.

Just out of intrest, where did you get the rental price from? If I knew it was that affordable I wouldn't have driven!

I'm in Surrey too and as a serial BMW owner I would definitely make a road trip of it.

But then I'm retired so don't have time constraints!

Given yours I'd probably put up with the misery of Gatwick and a rented M2.

Well I've never rented a car before so I have no idea what they cost however after looking at Sixt from Munich, the cheapest M car was the X3M at £700.

I dont want to drive a 4x4 around so searched rental cars Munich and found this website

https://www.carvia.com/mietanfrage-suchergebnisse/...

I was a bit skeptical at first, thought it might have been one of those dodgey car rental places who ask you to pay an exrra £1000 a day otherwise the excess is your kidneys and liver but it looks quite legit. I'm still going to going to call up/email before booking but for now, I think theyre legit

2018 M240i manual, had it 3 years, love it, if time off work wasnt an issue, i would drive there without ever considering a rental
