We are travelling to Bruges at the end of November for a weekend break with our two boys aged 4 and 7.

Plan is to pick the kids up from school Friday afternoon, drive from Devon to Folkstone and stay at the premier inn near the tunnel (£35 a night. Bargain!) then get an early tunnel and drive to Bruges. Driving back Sunday evening.

Obviously there will be Christmas markets and waffles galore (as well as a very sensible amount of Belgian beer) but does anyone have any top tips, things not to miss etc whilst there?

If you're driving down the E40 then consider a trip to Plopsaland.

Done a tour of the canals around Bruges before - while the commentary is obviously aimed at adults, it's pretty enough and interesting enough for kids.

Alcoves. Lots of alcoves. They're like nooks and crannies...

Either way, Bruges is like a fking fairytale..

We used to take my lad age 2 probably upto 10. He was happy just sitting in the hostel/other ruin bars with us in our company. He was/is well behaved.

Plenty of day stuff to do together as a family relaxing with great food and wandering around rather than must dash to kid focused stuff like some parents obsess about.

Don't feel like you have to cram your day with education and kids places whilst in Brugges.

However if your kids are loud, run about types I'm not sure Brugges is the right place.

Both boys certainly have their loud, run about moments but know how to behave in adult company. I'm certainly not looking for the number 1 trampoline park in Bruges like some parents might! We have been on a few city breaks with them and they always seem to enjoy wandering about and taking it all in. Bruges at Christmas looks like a fairy tale so that should be more than enough for them but wanted to make sure there wasn't any must see locations that we might otherwise miss.

It looks like Sinterklaas Day is the Sunday that we will be visiting but it is difficult to find much information on that. Will play it by ear and see where we end up!

There’s usually an ice rink in the square when the Christmas Markets are on.

Can I suggest you also find a place selling proper advocaat - get a jar of it. Basically it’s got the consistency of thick custard and is 40% proof. Nom nom nom thud
