Good Evening one and all

Looking for a 6 day driving itinerary from Brisbane to Melbourne which avoids Sydney, pretyy much everything i've found so far appears to route via Sydney

Also looking for the same duration or slightly less drive Melbourne to Sydney. All suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance

We took the old Hume highway from Melbourne and detoured through the blue mountains and back Down towards Sydney. Did over about 5 days.

If you want to avoid Sydney then go inland via the A39 through Parkes, Dubbo, Goondiwindi, and Toowoomba.

(Edit - reverse that order, I misread your post as from Melb to Brisbane. Additional changes follow smile )

It’ll take 18 hours of driving, and you should really only drive during daylight - on the country roads there will be Roos everywhere at dawn / dusk.

You could go to Parkes and out through Orange to Bathurst, then head back inland to carry on down to Melbourne.

Parkes has the observatory used by NASA for the Apollo 11 moon landings, and Bathurst has the circuit (which is a public road). Most towns will have some sort of tourist attraction.

ETA
For Melb back to Sydney go round the coast.

Also what time of year? It will be very hot and a risk of bush / grass fires from Nov (maybe even Oct) to Feb.

There a few different ways to go around Sydney but they’re all shorter/longer versions of what Jader has described, and about 1700km, so 18-19 hours would be about right.

Whichever way you go, the bits about bushfires and Roos are important too - fires move fast and Skippy makes a proper mess of a car.

Coast road back is a nice drive, with quite a few little towns to stop for food/accommodation though can get v busy depending on time of year

Enjoy!

Ah, right, less chance of bush fires then but bring yer woolies - will be midwinter and inland gets pretty chilly! Snow is not unheard of, and the Snowy Mountains area (clue in the name) has a couple of ski resorts if that’s your thing.

For example, the average weather info for Dubbo…

Upshot is that with fewer tourists, accommodation should be easier, though there are school hols for two weeks around end June/beginning July and these vary according to State.

Bring your wellies for Victoria!

Sunrise about 7:30, sunset about 5:15 and cold (low teens max, probably between 0 and 5 overnight) and wet.

Brissy will be nice though - should be mid twenties.

There’s a reason Victorians go to QLD on holiday in July smile

Do you have to come south or could you go north instead?

We have to travel south to Melbourne and then north to Sydney as we are going for the Lions tour
