I usually cross the channel via the tunnel albeit I have also done it a few times via Newhaven-Dieppe and Plymouth-Roscoff. On Sunday I'm doing P&O Dover-Calais for the first time.

For the tunnel, you clear both sets of passport control before you embark which means that once you disembark you can just clear off to wherever you're going. However for the ferries (the ones I've taken) you have to clear local passport control immediately after disembarking which I always find a bit of a grind- I just want to head off.

So the question is: on the Dover-Calais route is it the same as the tunnel (both sets before embarkation) or like the other ferries I've taken (one set each side).

A quick google has failed to get me a result so asking here as idly curious.

TIA

I did DFDS Dover-Dunkirk the other week (same passports/queue/waiting area as P&O and Irish ferries I think) and both lots of passports were before boarding. Dunkirk had a customs area to pull people over and search if they felt like it but it was straight out and on to the main road.

Not sure if it helps, but coming back (i.e. Calais - Dover) it's both passport control before boarding & then drive straight off (albeit round a UK customs building) into Dover.

I came through Dover on way to Calais.

Entered the lane for passport control, 2 cars in front.

Straight to P&Ocheck at 12:02, got on the 12:05 ferry, having collected cash from Travelx

This I MUST add is a first

I did a P&O day trip from Dover - Calais two days ago

5 min queue to get through passports on UK side for the 1005 sailing. Zero queue coming back for the 2105 return trip - there must have been 20 gates open and 5 cars approaching them!

And it all cost £39 return!

Hi what is the colour called on the car in the photo? I love some of the newer colours knocking around at the moment

Naively, it amazed me that I could book an overnight trip at short notice over August BH weekend for under £80 for the crossing. If I don't get fked about at the border too much I can see me doing much more of this.
