I know these questions are asked regularly but it’s very difficult to search.

Any recommendations please for a nice hotel, with good food on site, in the south of the country (say, roughly, below a line drawn from the Dartford Tunnel to the Solent). Pool and other facilities would be nice but not essential. MrsC and I just need to be far from the madding crowd for a few days.

Budget is healthy but not unlimited. Dont mind paying for something worth having. However, the only well-known place which sprung to mind was the Pig, but at just under £1000 for two nights midweek, room only, in term time, that seemed a little salty?

Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this at least 150 miles outside of the OP's target area?

Horsted Place and Buxted Park, (both near Uckfield in East Sussex) seem to get good recommendations.

Depending on which bit of the Solent you're drawing your line to, this place is very nice.

Gravetye Manor
Foxhills
Wotton House
Alexander House

Varying degrees of budget, but all nice

Agree with Christchurch Harbour Hotel - very nice. Jetty restaurant is lovely too.

Bailiffscourt between Bognor and Littlehampton and just south of Arundel, is terrific. Beautiful pools inside and out, 200 yards from the sea. Very countryside, and it's own pub just up the lane, the Black Horse at Climping. Hugely recommended.

I was a bit disappointed with Bailiffscourt when I stayed there for a few nights a couple of years ago.

The spa is nice but the hotel is a weird layout and whilst the service in the restaurant was friendly it was incredibly amateurish considering the cost.

A former colleague was a big fan of their restaurant.

Perhaps a big too close to civilisation for a 'far from the madding crowd' trip.

South Lodge near Horsham in Sussex?

Massive Spa, good restaurants, biggest Rhodendren in the UK.

The travel section in this week's Sunday Times has an article which lists an alternative hotel for each "Pig". Not sure which one(s) sit in your area of interest, but it might be worth seeing if you can dig out a copy from somewhere.

To make up for my earlier faux pax I can help.

It recommended the tinwood estate, Chichester and Tillingham near Peasmarsh.

No idea what there like. But going on the alternatives to the pig harlyn bay, good but nothing like the pig!

The Tinwood estate near Chichester is very nice. Accommodation is in cabins overlooking the vineyards and the food and wine are both really good.

Not much in the way of facilities though and definitely no spa/pool, although I think some of the lodges might have hot tubs or saunas.
