Next Summer Planning - Driving To The Italian Alps

After spending a few days there this summer, I'm hatching a plan to spend a few more days in the Aosta valley next summer. Current (very rough) thinking is to drive there through France, past Dijon and Geneva (take a few days doing that) and either through the Mont Blanc tunnel or over the St Bernard Pass to Aosta where we'd spend 2 or 3 nights and then head back into France for a week in a gite with a pool etc.

Thats the broad plan anyway but does anyone have any recommendations on things to do/see/places to stay roughly on that route? Read something the other day for example to not bother with Geneva and head to Lausanne instead? No idea what Geneva is like outside of the airport!
