Hi all,

Yorkshire experts - what’s great to do with 2 lively boys (8 and 11) around these parts.

Staying just outside Sleights - some stuff to exercise them but also stuff they might like to do!

Recommendations appreciated …

Thanks in advance. Austin.

Take a trip on the North York Moors Heritage Railway. Steam and/or heritage diesel trains run between Pickering (the Harry Potter station) and Whitby. A great day out.

Or a bit further afield, Eden Camp Modern History Museum.

If exercise is on the agenda, park the car at Sutton Bank visitor centre and walk down past the gliding club (and watch gliders coming and going) to the White Horse of Kilburn. Looks very impressive from above or below. For maximum exercise, park underrneath the horse and walk up!

Have you tried any of the Treasure Trails you can buy? There's one in Whitby but several for York, Goathland, Pickering etc

Not followed one myself but we've got one as a present for somebody else and told they are good fun. Reviews online are good as well.

Exercise - there's a parkun 5k out of Whitby area every Saturday morning. Completely free and great atmosphere. Cindertack is the name. Get the kids and yourself there, will be the best value thing you can do.

Dalby Forest is run by England Forestry Commission 17 miles - has Go Ape ropes activity. Great mountain bike routes and cycle hire. The red route is 25 miles but can be cut into 3 Smaller sections. Costs money £££, they charge you to enter and car parking is free.

Whitby, speed boat trip out of the harbour. If not Whitby the definitely happens at other bays down the coast. Again £££

Whitby itself with the Dracula links. Be worth looking to see if there are any events on.

Public transport (buses) are good along the coast, so could always walk from Whitby to Robin hoods bay and then bus back. Great views, two options old railway line or Cleveland way. Railway line easiest but not as good views. Or anywhere along the coast and bus back.

Rosebery Topping around 25 miles away, visitor center and could include walk to Captain Cook monument. Great views and reasonable walking surfaces.

Teesside white water course Canoeing centre 35 miles away. I’m guessing you’d have research. They might be courses or experiences during hols £££? I experience myself, May be an event could spectate perhaps.???

Slot machines on sea front always a winner.

Thanks for those suggestions.

The Steam Train is a must - keen on the Potter connection.

Like the idea of the treasure trail … although my two will want something at the end if I describe it like that.

Gliding sounds cool too.

Might see if I can get junior junior to do the 5k cinder track park run. Crossing the Larpool viaduct looks ace!

Another vote for Dalby Forest from a 'relative' local.

Bike trails are excellent, Go Ape very good.

There's North Yorkshire Water Park not a million miles away, lots of lake activities, assault courses, zip wires etc etc.
