Morning

I had planned to pack up the car and drive us to Switzerland in September, but a couple of things have got in the way - we've left it a bit late as we both need to renew our passports, child needs a passport, we can't get the pooch in the kennels etc.

I thought then that we would look at a bit of a stay-cation.

Criteria:
Ideally no more than 4.5 hours from Northamptonshire
Nice scenery
Rural
Good for walking a dog off the lead without a ton of people around
Beach not too far for a day trip
Good pubs and cafes
Nice towns/villages to walk round
Just looking to get away really, doesn't have to be action packed.

We like snowdonia so that's high on the list, also Devon, I used to holiday there as a child but haven't been in years.

Other thoughts are Cumbria, Yorkshire/york/north York moors, but don't know a great deal about these places. I'd be open to going to Scotland but would probably need an overnight stop with the baby and dog if going too far.

Not looking to go to Norfolk or the Cotswolds, done those to death as they're doable as a day trip. New forest and much of the south coast also out really as I grew up down there, go back regularly.

It'll be 7 nights or so, but could break this up in to two different places. Planning on staying in an airbnb cottage or something.

Any suggestions of something suitable much appreciated!

Northumberland. Base yourself around Bamburgh, Beadnell or Newton by the Sea. Alnwick is also a good base if you want somewhere with a bit more going on facilities-wise.

Looking at your requirements i would say a trip to Shropshire would be ideal

Loads of scenerey, plenty of walks, lots of pubs and cafes and the welsh coast and snowdonia is about and hour and a half away depending on where you stay.

Places like Shrewsbury and Ludlow would be ideal bases.

Northumberland is a good shout but North York Moors would also fit the bill - you have the coast (Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay, Whitby) but its also lovely further in land - Helmsley, Kirkby Moorside, Rosedale Abbey etc. And like much of Yorkshire all dog friendly.

We used to go to Robins Hoods Bay every year when the kids were very small/babys and we had a dog - it just used to work and we had lovely traditional hols there, very fond memories.

The cycling is great (challenging) too if you like that.

Possible alternatives to Snowdonia are mid Wales (Powys or Ceredigion) and Pembrokeshire.

Northumberland.

If that's too far Robin Hood's Bay or Staithes are worth a look.
