Have got a rare opportunity to go away on holiday with my girlfriend, the first full week together we’ve had since we met due to childcare issues,

But it’s at very short notice, in about two weeks. I did ideally want to go to Corsica, but I cannot find any flights on the day we have to travel.

But I can find flights to Sardinia, which feels like a reasonable alternative. However, I’ve never been there and know very little about the place.

The flights would be to Olbia, and I’d like to get an apartment somewhere well located as a base, hire a car, and drive around the island a bit seeking out some of the many beautiful looking beaches there.

Is anyone familiar with Sardinia? I’d really welcome some advice on a good place to base ourselves (Olbia itself?) which ideally wouldn’t be more than an hour from the airport, plus any recommendations for places to visit in that part of Sardinia (pretty towns, nice beaches etc).

I've only been to the northern end around Alghero and really enjoyed it.

A car would definitely be best to see the island.

We went to Olbia area with our son just before he started school, lovely place.

We based ourselves in Cannigionne which is a small little town with a delightful beach. We chose it because it had self-catering apartments with a pool with a beach in walking distance, because we like to mix and match beach and pool holidays. It was quiet, but we didn't need anything lively with a 4yo in tow.

You definitely want to hire a car, because there are so many amazing beaches to discover.

On a PH-related note, you might want to visit Spaggia Capriccioli, the scene of Bond's Lotus Esprit S1 emerging from the sea in The Spy Who Loved Me

There is no accomodation nearby, everyone drives to it, but there is plenty of parking.

There are loads of lovely beaches like that along the Costa Smeralda. Take your pick here: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g5978799...

Lots of people rave about Porto Cervo. It's a man made ('new to look old') resort on the east side of that penisula which is home to lots of boutique shopping and loads of super yachts. It was nice enough for a day out to have a look around and see how the other half live but really not our thing so we beat a retreat back to the quieter beaches and read our books in the sun on some almost deserted beaches.

I took a great liking to the local Ichnusa beer, have a cold one in the sun for me!

As a family we are all agreed that it was our favourite holiday ever. The people were friendly and the food was great. Most importantly there was acres of space wherever we went (in June, before schools broke up). I hate being crammed onto a beach with people right next to you, this was the complete opposite of that, loads of open space and really, really relaxing.
