Other than sex shows, red light district and coffeeshops can anyone recommend me any must see/do's in Amsterdam?

We were going to do the Van Gough museum but its fully booked for the time we're there

Mushrooms were still being sold last time I was there, which made a canal sight-seeing trip more entertaining. smile

Stroll through Vondel Park.
Few pints and if your hungry some traditional Dutch food in a decent brown cafe.Jordaan and the area around Anne Franks house is great for this
A canal boat tour, we used this company and chose the boat that departs next to Anne Franks house: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/AttractionProductRev...

Leidseplein is a good lively area for an evening meal and a few drinks.

If you’re going to do a canal tour book one of the small boat ones. We did it last year and were the only people on it, so we got a personal tour for a lot less smile

Mind you, it could also be full, but worth a shot. Plus the smaller boats go places the big ones can’t.

If you want to do Anne Frank's house book tickets in advance, the queues in tourist season can be crazy.

Amsterdam do a city card that covers public transport and a lot of attractions,

Rijksmuseum is well worth a visit

Worth doing a canal cruises too, there are also some hop on hop off boats you can buy a day ticket for and use to get around the city too.

If you fancy some outdoor stuff Amsterdamse Bos is nice, you can hire bikes or kayaks, there's a goat farm in the middle which is great if you have kids with you.

If you don't do the city card, all busses/trams/trains are now tap in and out with a debit card which makes getting around really easy.

Sadly the Tony's Chocoloney cafe has closed which was the main reason to go to Amsterdam.

Depending how long you're there if if you want to visit other towns, the Teylers museum in Haarlem and Escher in Den Haag are my favorite museums

We had a nice cheese and wine canal boat tour. There were only ten of us on it so wine and cheese was plentiful.

Re Ann Franks- it’s not a question of getting there early. You need to book tickets and an entrance time. Looking on the website the next ticket you can buy is for 8pm on 19 August!

The Adam tower just across the water from the main train station (there's a free ferry running every couple of minutes).

Don't buy any edibles from the tourist shops, they don't contain any CBD and won't get you high. The only place that can legally sell them is the coffee shops.

Watch out for pick pockets, but that goes for any European city these days, including London.

I thought Amsterdam was a beautiful city in the daytime, but changes into a horrible, seedy place once it gets dark. There are a lot of very dodgy looking people walking around once the sun goes down.

I found the whole of the red light district a bit sad really, I can see why the Major wants to move it. I assume the whole thing is scam to get money out of gullible tourists. However, some of the women in the windows are incredibly hot.

Amsterdam is putting a lot of effort in trying to dissuade certain types of tourists, so be aware there are now big fines for drunkenness, smoking weed in public, pissing in the street, etc. If you're planning on visiting a coffee shop you'll need ID and they're not all particularly welcoming to foreigners.
