Couple of days in Windsor this coming weekend.

Legoland on Sunday with the kids.

Staying at the De Vere Beaumont Estate

So what should we look to do on the Saturday?

Castle looks pricey.... is it worth it?

What else to consider?

Also presume we have to drive from the hotel into Windsor itself.

Go for a walk in Windsor park - There is a track to follow to the Copper Horse with King George III sat on with a great view of Windsor and the county.

Windsor great park is really good - Savill garden is nice, but the long walk is a great vista
There is currently a Wheel to go on in Alexandra gardens
There are motor boats and rowing boats you can take out from the thames
A mooch into Eton and go on the Eton school tour (has to be booked in advance)
Castle is ok but children may get bored
You can walk outside the castle and look at the round tower and wonder where the tunnel is that allegedly goes to Macdonalds really is
The crooked house is on the shortest street in England
Changing of the guard is usually daily in summer
If there this weekend , Windsor Tri is on Sunday so watch the local roads and the Thames will be full of swimmers in the morning
Sir Sydney Camm invented the hurricane used to live in Alma Road and on Barry Avenue is a plane near the river
Alexandra gardens has crazy golf and kids things to doat the end near the plane

There's lots to see and do

I'm sure there is more

The castle is expensive, but it’s pretty good if you like that sort of thing.

As mentioned, you can walk up to Eton by crossing the bridge, mess about on the river (hire a boat or book a cruise), walk along the high street outside the castle along to the top of the long walk and then down the long walk if you’re feeling keen. Changing of the guard on Saturday morning, you can watch them march through town at around 10:45 or so.

Duck Tour as an alternative to a cruise or hiring a row / motorboat.

There’s the visitor centre at the guildhall which I think is still open, and will have some other ideas: https://www.windsor.gov.uk/visitor-information/vis...

Something I learned from Qi, which might be briefly fun for kids - ask them to look at the columns supporting the outside roof at the guildhall, to see if they can see what’s wrong with them.

The ones in the middle aren’t tall enough - info as to why here: https://inel.wordpress.com/2007/02/09/sir-christop... The gap was filled by tiles, but it’s still there.

Or just stroll around the town for a bit.

Thanks all some good stuff

Is there a river taxi type thing from Runnymede to Windsor?

Or just the 'river cruise'

If you're so inclined, the Royal Windsor Flower Show is on tomorrow from 10am to 6pm. Not my kind of thing but I have a few friends going which is the only reason I know about it. I live about 3 miles away!

You've got the Magna Carta and Air Force Memorial on the hotel doorstep.

There's also Brooklands and Mercedes Benz World (both next to each other) about 20 mins drive.

There is. https://www.frenchbrothers.co.uk/public-trips/runn...

You can also rent a motorboat from John Logie who is located along Barry Avenue in Windsor and go for a self-driven tour up the river. If you're worried about driving a motor boat, don't. They are very slow and it would be difficult to get into any trouble. They also have rowing boats, but why?!

Definitely consider a Duck tour if you've got Lego aged companions. I sudpect pre-booking essential. Ice cream (+Windsor tax) a bag of swan food by the French Brothers trip boats, just along the river from the Alexandra Gardens car park. Aim for the Hurricane and follow the Thames to the right.
The Castle is great, super views, as is the view down the Long Walk from, conveniently, the Two Brewers pub.
Nice playground, park and fountains on Bachelors Acre....toy department in Daniels...
Weather looks good tomorrow. Get parked up early...I'll be walking in I think..

I went to Windsor once. I upset the woman in the bakery opposite the castle after I ordered a couple of chocolatey bread sticks. She was visibly unhappy when I told her to put them back after she microwaved them and asked for £8.

Good shout Alickadoo. In a town of artisan prices whilst not being artisan quality, the 'Spoons breakfast and pint has just gone down exceedingly well!

I have fond memories of Windsor Wetherspoons.

Having driven back from the Ring one day, we went out in Windsor fell into Wetherspoons found the champagne was stupidly cheap & drank their ful stock (though I don;t think they had much)

Couple of years later having had a one nighter with a married lady a month or so before I's arranged to meet her there. Didn't expect her to turn up. But she was there waiting. She's still married, just to me now!

Windsor is a bit pretentious, Wethersponns is a good antidote to that.

I was actually born in Windsor.
