Passport dates
Discussion
Probably answered before but I’m aware that travel to EU now requires passport to be less than 10 years old from the issued date… AND “valid for 3 months after date of return” but how are we judging that… earlier than 3 months before expiry date or more than 3 months before 10 years from issue?

It’s 3 months before expiry date (not the 10 years date). The ten year rule only applies on entry to the EU not on entry back to UK.I would have been wrong, but a bit of searching has thrown up a couple of Simon Calder videos where he has provided an apparently definitive answer.

On the day of entry to the Schengen Area, your passport must have been issued in the past 10 years; and on your proposed day of exit it should have at least three months to run before the expiry date printed in the passport.

Can't answer your question but on a related note, why the hell don't they just put an expiry date on a passport that's ten years from its issue date if the extra months aren't considered valid by certain territories anyway?
Because in general it’s only the EU that this rule applies and it didn’t until we left the EU and are treated as a “third country”. For most of the rest of the world it’s expiry date (although plenty of countries have 3 or 6 mths left).Do new passports still add the extra on since brexit?

Because it wasn't an issue pre Brexit. Before June 2016, the passport office weren't to know the British public would vote to impose restrictions on themselves. Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
