Mrs 111R wants a short UK break and we have done Norwich, Bath, York, Stratford upon Avon, Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Exeter and Leeds.

Any suggestions on where else to go that isn't too far? Leeds was about the max distance I'd want to drive.

I wondered about Liverpool and Manchester as there's plenty to do but not sure what.

Are you into the beatles? A trip.on the Natuonal trists mini bus from Speke Hall is an interesting afternoon out. Book in advance. Personally I think we've over cooked the beatles goose, but I found McCartneys childhood home intriguing.

You could go on a ferry and get a bus to the beach at new Brighton, have fish and chips.

You could go shopping in Liverpool One. Go to the Tate.
Spend some time at The museum of slavery. Go to the Williamson tunnels.

Both cities have a reasonable night life, we regularly go to theatres in both, and to the Lowry in Salford.

But Liverpool is more compact.

I agree with quite a few of the Trip Advisor suggestions.

(Obviously you should ignore their item number 2)

Edited to add, the Metrolink (tram) service is great and links well to what’s only about a 30 minute train journey to Liverpool.

The Bee Network app is pretty good.

I was brought up just outside Manchester and my eldest now lives there and we visit quite often.

It's a great city with a huge variety of places to visit, bars to drink in and cafes/restaurants to eat in.

This was the view from New Brighton this morning (about 10 AM) looking towards Liverpool:

If you are in Liverpool, you can go to Chester or Port Sunlight (that's quite an interesting place) very quickly and cheaply on MerseyRail. It's quick (30 minutes to Chester) and cheap as chips.

The Lady Lever Art Gallery is interesting.

Yes, I've been a couple of times myself. Also, the Port Sunlight museum is very good. It's quite small, but worth a look.

Lyme Park? I think Lymm park is probably a set of swings. smile Don't forget Dunham Park on the smaller stately home scale.

Dunham Massey have some decent gardens. But a city break it is not.
