Hi all,

Just wondered for those that know the French road system how much tolls are and also the most convenient way to pay?

We will be travelling North to South (and back obvs) , is it easier to get box in the screen ( don’t know what they are called) or just pay through each toll?

Thanks in advance

I expect you can plot the route on an AA planner or other and get a quote.

People do recommend the tags, they make it simple. We always just swiped a credit card which works if you have someone in the passenger seat to reach the machine.

They are not badly priced for the quality of the roads, billiard smooth, empty and good driving standards. The police are fed up with U.K. drivers using them like autobahns so be a bit careful.

Use either a tag or contactless payment - very simple.

Thanks for the replies.

My wife has been told it costs around €400 each way from Calais to Nice just in tolls 😳😳😳 does that seem right? Seems steep to me.

As I said above before, use a route planner. It doesn’t look to be that cost:

I would guess it’s €100-130 each way. Plus fuel.

This, all day long.

Makes a very satisfying beep when the barrier goes up.

Even more satisfying to fly past the queues backed up at the manned booths/card machines

The barrier lifting Grand Prix (up to 130 kph) is my favorite part of the journey :-)

I have done about 20 trips across France and don’t think I have ever been more than 3-4 cars back in a queue. Most often it was straight in and out.

If you are going in August (French holiday season) get a tag. Off season it will only save you 10-15 minutes.

The only time we have seen long queues is weekends in n August!

I've done a few trips to the South of France and there are a few tolls in the south Between Dijon and Nice where the queue is easily 20 deep if not more. First time we went we didn't have a tag and probably queued for 30 mins or more at a time at those sorts of tolls. Probably because it was the summer holiday when all of France seem to head that way.

Ah, we used to come off at Dijon as that is where our friends place is. Must get worse from there on.

Basically you avoid the last weekend in July and the first weekend of August.

At other times look at Bison Fute for delays and hold ups

I've used Emovis for years - it just works brilliantly. Driving through the dedicated lanes at 30-40kph without stopping at all.

On an August weekend driving all the way to Nice (twice) it saved hours on the journey, the queues were hundreds of cars deep. Other times less is saved but it is still just more convenient and no trying to reach over with a card etc.

The holiday begins with the first beep, and the first emergency start.

Yet to use my Emovis tag.

The instructions make a big deal about positioning it within the black spotty area behind the mirror. Except on my MH, the black spotty area is entirely covered with a housing for the windscreen sensor gubbins.

So the tag sits underneath as close as it can get, i hope that's good enough !

Another vote for the beeping box. That very first time you drive at a barrier and have to hold your nerve trusting it will go up in time...
