I've rented cars in the US many times so well versed in their policies, CDW etc. We're looking to go to Canada this year, similar to our US trips where we take a car for the middle section of the holiday to go between cities.

Are there any fundamental differences between renting from US and Canada in relation to insurance etc.? I ran some searches with usual big providers (e.g. out of Toronto) and the prices actually seem cheaper than the US, but want to make sure I'm not missing any important cover.

Assuming you're booking on a UK/EU broker site (or the equivalent direct site), then the main difference is that in the US you get full CDW with £0 excess - so if you prang it, you just hand it back and smile. In Canada, the CDW will also be included, but will have an excess. It's much more like the typical European rental process.

Thanks. I just ran a quote on Hertz which mentions the excess/deductible but it doesn't tell you how much it is! When I click on the LDW (which is included) it says:

Protect the Car - Loss Damage Waiver
- Applies to all vehicle damage to Hertz rental car.
- Don’t have to file a claim with personal auto insurance for loss/damage to the Hertz vehicle.
- No deductible for you to pay to Hertz.
- Applies to any size vehicle.
- Applies regardless of who is at fault.

So looks like Hertz don't charge this? I haven't searched others yet.

it certainly appears that way - though don't take it as gospel that it'll be the same on all sites that sell Hertz. Obviously make sure that LDW is called out as "included" at the checkout if you are going direct.

Cheers - I normally go direct for car rental to avoid any issues, but thanks for the heads up on the whole excess thing as never needed to worry about that in the US.
