We are due to fly to the Maldives next month via Doha, from Edinburgh. We booked via a travel agent. I have added the Qatar Airways app to my phone and went to see where our seats are. The app doesn't show our seats but gives us an option to book at a minimum cost for each leg, so an extra £160 between us.

At present about 90% of the seats are still available to book. How likely is it that we will be allocated decent seats together? Or is there no way of avoiding this cost?

We went with Qatar Manchester to Doha then Sri Lanka and return from Maldives. I decided to take the hit and book the seats in advance - glad we did as on one of the outward flights there was a couple who whilst sat together, were in the middle 2 of 4!

It’s a fairly long flight to be hemmed in and personally on those flights I prefer to be in seats were we can get up without disturbing anyone else and equally not being the end 2 of a row of 3 seats and both have to move if the person with the window seat wants to go to the loo in the middle of your nap.

Thats you there

Stating the obvious but if you don't want to pre-book you can take a chance and choose the seats (from whats available) when you do online checkin 24 hours before.

Not Qatar, as I've only travelled solo on them, but on many other airlines I've left it to chance in the hope that I don't have to sit with my kids.

It's never worked laugh

Thanks all, some really good information and advice. I think I'll just bite the bullet and book for piece of mind.

I suppose the next question is do we book middle and isle in the row of 3 in the hope we get all 3 to ourselves - anybody had success in this method? Or, do we play safe and take isle and next seat in the row of four as suggested above?

Just let Qatar allocate the seats.

Don't worry about it.
