Longer Term Stay in the Canaries
Discussion
Hi,
We are looking to book a longer term stay in the canaries, probably 1 month +. Where do others find accommodation for longer stays? We'll probably do the first longer stay in Tenerife. The plan is to do this on a regular basis from early next year. A month + in a hotel just feels like it will be a bit much after a while.
Just wondered if there was a "go to" site for this?
TIA

Do you want to stay in a bigger type resort or somewhere a bit smaller and quieter?
I’ve just returned from La Mareta which is tiny and just along the coast from Golf Del Sur, and have booked up to stay in La Tejita in November / December. Again that’s a small place but is ideal for us as we aren’t a fan of the main resort type of places.

Speak to croyde as I believe he has spent some time out there.
Going back in June too Yep, spent 5 weeks over Dec/Jan. Used AirBnB both times but I did find that there wasn't an awful lot of choice if you were fussy about whereabouts you wanted to stay.
More stuff in the tourist areas but I wanted to be in the Spanish areas.
CarlosvivaEspaña who posts on here lives out there so might be worth asking him.

Thanks all. Appreciated.
We're not too fussy where to be honest. It would be nice to be within strolling distance of restaurants and the seafront ideally. Other than that we're easily pleased.
Had a quick look at AirBnB and the other site mentioned. We don't want anything overly large. Would like a shared pool and a private terrace/outside space if poss.

I have been spending winter abroad for the last few years - actually currently on Tenerife and have been here for the last two months - and my experience and recommendations are -- Staying somewhere for a month or more is vastly different from spending a week or two, so things that you could live with on a shorter stay get irritating fast.
- What will you be doing for the month or so you are there. I know it seems a silly question, but if for example it is going for a walk in the late afternoon or evening, then is there anywhere nearby that is pleasant to walk? Are you going to be cooking, then if so what are the cooking facilities in the AirBnB like and are there supermarkets nearby?
- Outside space is essential, but so is the direction it faces as a north faced terrace isn't going to be a pleasant place to sit in the evening.
- The AirBnB listing - hosts frequently don't update the listing when changes are made to the property or furniture changes, so if something is essential, e.g. pool loungers, then make sure you confirm them with the host. As for kitchen equipment at most AirBnBs - well most hosts seem to do a rush shop to Ikea and buy a random selection of items, and then mix those with the cast offs from a dead relative - at the last place we stayed there was a pressure cooker but no trays for the oven!

Great beach at La Tejita, I walked to it from El Medano when I stayed in December and Montaña Roja is a very special place. I’m also not one who seeks out tourist resorts, the quieter and less of them sorts the better I’ve just returned from La Mareta which is tiny and just along the coast from Golf Del Sur, and have booked up to stay in La Tejita in November / December. Los Abrigos could be worth a look, it’s small and friendly but very accessible and got a nice selection of places to eat/drink.
If I was going for a month then I’d probably stay in a couple of different places and explore with a car.
I'd say that a car is a must. I stayed in Icod de los Vinos, a very Spanish town near the coast up North.
I grew to really like the place. No one spoke English which helped my Spanish.
I drove somewhere most days and kept myself very entertained for 5 weeks. Clocked up 3000kms.
This June I've found a place about 15 minutes walk into Puerto de la Cruz, so lots of places to eat and drink. Right by a beach too but I'll still be exploring by car.
I have a book of hikes but only actually did about 4 of them last time (one walk was so good I did it 4 times), so only another 36 in the book to go.
If you like exploring, I can't see you getting bored in a month

Been thinking about this, just returned from an impromptu 5 dayer, beautiful weather for mid feb.. 24/25 degrees every day, stayed in los gigantis. Defo not a party place, a lot of older people and the place is dead after 10 pm. Got a pretty central apartment on a complex for £70/ night but could’ve got a far better deal longer term.

had a magical experience one Christmas. Son was being an arse so stayed at the apartment (La Matanza). So my daughter and I jumped in the car and just drove west. We had been to Los Silos when they were babies but this time all the villagers were making their way to the open air gathering space where the school children were performing in a Carol Service. Never forget that the Music teacher was the spitting image of Moss from the IT Crowd.I grew to really like the place. No one spoke English which helped my Spanish.

Tenerife has such a variation that you wont get bored in a month. Just try and be an adventurist and look for staying away from the usual Brit Places. I would say a car is a must. Dirt cheap compared to the Balerics. We are going for a month in August. Actually it is the first time we are doing summer in Tenerife in over 15 years of going there. Staying in El Medano but will definitely be doing the whole island from Los Silos to Las Teresitas; Los Gigantes to El Medano.
We stayed here when we went to Tenerife

We went about 13 years ago but it looks to still be owned by the same British couple. Smallish town/village up the mountain from the airport with shops and bars but only a 20 minute bus ride into Los Cristianos.
