I'll be flying with Easyjet soon, and only have the basic small carry on allowance. Does anyone have experience of how strict they are with the sizing?

I have a couple of soft backpack style bags which I could travel with - one fits the requirements perfectly and the other is a bit oversize but would likely squish to size unless it was quite full. I'd prefer to take the larger one, but not if it brings me hassle!

I don't think I've ever had to put my bag in the sizing frame, but I'd rarely flown Easyjet so don't really know what their policy is like...

How big is the backpack.

40L you won't even get a second glance. 65L might garner some attention.

Backpacks tend not to get a second look. Last time I flew Sleazyjet I had a 30L backpack filled to the gills, no one bothered me over it but it still fit under the seat. With basic carry on you aren't "supposed" to have access to the overhead bins.

It's the people who are clearly taking the piss with a massive hardshell case as a carry on who get targeted.

40-45L I think, so not massive. It's been my general experience too that it's not normally backpacks that get any attention (even massive hiking ones...)

Like your previous trip, I tend to aim for something under seat and not fight the hordes with the hard cases for the overheads. If I ruled the world wheeled hand luggage would be banned - it's not carry on if you don't carry it on!

45L, you'll be fine.

100% with you on banning wheeled cases in the cabin.

Fine with sensibly sized rucksacks on easyjet in my experience, less so with Ryanair.

I flew out last year and didn’t get questioned.

Flew back home and it’s £30 to store it. Wasn’t allowed on.
Same bag. Hard luggage but a small “standard” weekend bag.
EasyJet have reduced the sizes so a standard carry on is now too big.

A laid in front of me had to pay so she left her case behind and just carried all her belongings with her.
They allowed it. The lady was fuming though biggrin

I've just done a return trip to Cyprus with EJ from Bristol and they were all over the carry on bags. Attendant standing firmly in position with a hand held card machine and loads of bags being checked in the 'sizing frame'. It's pretty clear on their website but it didn't stop people trying to ram their bags into the frame and plenty of shouting going onsmile

"It can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles and wheels) and must be kept under the seat in front of you. That should be enough to bring all the essentials for your journey or for a short trip. Your bag can weigh up to 15kg, but we do ask that you’re able to lift and carry it yourself."

You might just get a half full 27L rucksack in if you're lucky. Mate of mine rang them up and they suggested 23L was max size. 45 cm as the tallest measurement won't fit under an economy class seat.

They do seem to be checking more now that they have changed the rules. Flew back from Milan a couple of weeks ago and they were charging people at the gate who had slightly oversize bags. If you have a soft bag that can be squished into the bag checker you have more chance of getting away with it. Once on the plane they didn't seemed bothered which bags went into the overhead lockers.

I have never seen Easyjet check hand baggage weight at the gate, and often travel with a heavy wheel-able case. Although I do know people who have been stopped at the gate due to the weight of their hand luggage flying with TUI.

Flew with easyjet this weekend from Gatwick and they were getting everyone to check the size of their carry on at the gate. I really wouldn't risk it.

I've got a full 30L backpack under an Easyjet seat before... Including two bottles of duty free strapped tongue outside of it, with roommto spare.

A stuffed 40L might have difficulty but you'd be surprised what fits into just 30L.

It depends on the airport you're flying from, they're always a nightmare from Gatwick in my experience. You might be OK but they often have a high vis patrolling the boarding queues looking for anybody to screw a few extra quid from.

Yeah I think if you mash the sack up a bit it might fit. Also it pays to make sure your sack doesn't have a rigid back in case you need to 'fold' it a bit. Easyjet seats are max 45cm wide or thereabouts so there'll be no room left for your feet unless you shove the sack further through into the underseat area in front.

You'll be safe with 30 litres. 35+ will be pushing it I reckon.

Generally, rucksacks are not checked by staff at the gate.

Just back from Amsterdam with EasyJet from Luton, saw 2 people getting caught by the attendant with the card machine ready.

It seemed like they were going for the long weekend or sports bags over rucksacks but anything clearly too big will get spotted unless your lucky.

I would measure it and see how it compares to the dimensions given on their website.

Some good food for thought, thanks everyone!

The smaller bag is definitely ok on the stingy allowance, the bigger one definitely not and probably on the edge of what might attract attention (even if it is soft and could likely be made to fit)

I know I'll be coming back with more stuff than I leave with, so I guess I'll pack the small bag and see if there is a reasonable amount of space left... if not I chance it with the bigger one!
