Mrs Surveyor and I are heading off to Thailand on 15th March for two weeks and whilst my passport has over a year until it expired, hers was issued on 15th March 2014 with an expiry date of 15th December 2024.

We’ve been told the ‘6 Month of valid passport’ rule applies and that this is based on the expiry date listed in which case she doesn’t need a new passport for this trip, but have also been told it runs from the issue date in which case she does.

Can anybody provide a link to some official guidance on whether a new passport is needed before we pester the passport office on Monday.

Assume you're both UK passport holders:

Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from when you enter Thailand.

You could be refused entry to Thailand if your passport is damaged or has pages missing.

If you’re a dual national, to avoid problems at immigration, you must leave Thailand on the same passport you used to enter.

Given her pp is valid until December, I don’t see why you’d have an issue.

I believe the 10 year from the date of issue requirement is only if you're entering an EU country therefore as others have confirmed she should be OK with more than 6 months to expiry date. In this case the issue date is irrelevant.

Thanks all, we had seen that guidance for entering Thailand confirming 6 months, but it was that EU advice that was causing some uncertainty on when that ran from.

Cheers

I would renew it.

10 years from issue is the standard and the overlap is a british oddity that lots of places don't recognise, 6 months vailidity means 9 yrs 6 months from issue.

I was less than 24hr away from being refused permission to fly for the same reason a couple of years ago! My passport had about "7 months" of vailidity when I only needed 3 months, but it was 9 years 9 months to the day it was issuesd, ryanair gate lass stopped me and made phonecalls before I could board.

the thread I posted went 'nanas with argueing back and forth, and of course the obligatory ph patronising throbber responces, but I just wouldn't chance it!

Just to close this thread out, given the guidance above we decided not to risk it and have renewed her passport. It arrived in the post today which was pretty decent service from the passport office in Durham.

Good to know was that using the normal online renewal process?
