Planing a 2 night stay in London with my wife for a significant birthday, so as per the title, for circa £1000 a night, where would you stay if not the Savoy?

Essentials are pool/ spa & cocktail bar

Having zero experience of 4 figure hotels and having recently watched the documentary series about the rebuilding of Claridges, I'd stay at Claridges.

I've stayed at both the above and I'd say Claridges out of those two.

Edit, if pool and spa aren't essential then Hazlitts every time. The Duke of Monmouth suite is really special. The staff treat you like it's your London home rather than an Hotel

'Better' is entirely subjective. There is a lot of extremely good 5* hotels in london IMO, all catering to differing tastes and wants.
Claridge's, Savoy, Ritz all have the name & history which may be important for a big occasion. They do have their quirks, which some enjoy and others don't. Of those, I think Claridge's takes it.
Personally for me, The Connaught & The Langham are hard to beat.

I’ve stayed at the Savoy, Goring, Claridges and the Dorchester.

I’d take the Dorchester over the other 2, not keen on the location of the Savoy.

Claridges we thought was woeful when we last stayed, but that was before the expensive refit. We really thought it was living on past "faded" glories.
The Langham & Ampersand we thought are v nice, but a touch below The Savoy.
The Royal Horseguards I really like. I consider it more understated and low key than the others, but that works for us.
The Ritz is too OTT for my liking.

The Savoy hits the nail on the head just right for us when staying as a couple.

I'm no expert on fancy-pants hotels, but of the three in London we've stayed at I'd rate Hotel 41 very highly. It's opposite Buckingham Palace Mews, not far from Victoria Station and Green Park tube. Below it is another hotel, but '41' is one floor of rooms and a lounge/library on the top floor. It has its own separate entrance and reception and a lift to bypass the floors of the hotel below. I don't think it has the Spa, etc, that the OP wanted.

Royal Horse Guards was great too. Especially if you want to be close to the Thames with decent views from rooms on floors above the treetops in the little gardens outside.

The only other one I can recall being impressed by was the St. Pancras hotel. That was like going back in time to the glamour days of long distance train travel. It's the most architecturally interesting of the three.

The Goring at Victoria. Kate's parents stayed there the night before the wedding.

The Stafford in St James'.

Corinthia? Seems to be the place to be for your high-end celebs if nothing else.

The Corinthia Hotel London

The Langham, London

The Dorchester, London

Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London

I would recommend The Corinthia Hotel London as the top choice. Why? 1) Location and Ambiance 2) ESPA Life at Corinthia 3) Bassoon Bar 4) The Rooms and Suites 5) The Northall and Kerridge's Bar & Grill

Only ever been for dinner at The Goring but thought it was fantastic.

We’ve stayed at the Baglioni which is opposite Hyde Park so great if you want to stay in that area of London, but it doesn’t have a pool so wouldn’t be any good for you.

Any reason why you have to be in London? Some lovely options with that budget within 45 minutes of London.

Four Seasons always gets my vote. But at that price there are a lot of options!
They have 2 one on Park Lane and another over near Tower Bridge.

Thanks all for the responses, I knew I could count on you all for some great suggestions.

We were thinking London as we are only 25 minutes or so from central London as we live in St Albans so can maximise time away from Children without too much traveling! However, Paddy 1970, any suggestions of alternatives outside of London very welcome.

I was thinking of the Savoy as i proposed to my wife at the Burgh Island Hotel and love the whole 1930's style Art deco aesthetic. But really want to check that i am not missing a trick by not looking at better options. Will spend a bit of time of the web sites, The Corinthia + dinner at Kerridge's bar and grill sounds very tempting...

thanks again and certainly keep any other options coming.

The Connaught is what you're after - has the period thing going plus fabulous bars, a better location and you're even next to Scotts!.

Savoy is fine but Connaught is great.

Nothing new to add, but glad to see someone suggested the Shard, as that's the first place I would head for if I had the money...
I do value a good view over pretty much everything else though.

I did stay in a Thames view room at the Royal Horseguards a good few years ago. It was nice enough, but I'm surprised to see it mentioned in the same company as the Savoy and similar.

The Hoxton at Holburn

or the Lanesborough

A couple of others would be Flemings or the Chiltern, both very quirky.

Does it have to be London?

The Martinez in Cannes takes some beating for Art Deco vibes.

Better situated too imo.
