We’ve got a flight from Edinburgh to Heathrow then a 2 hour wait for our connecting flight to Haneda.

The OH wants to book a lounge but honestly I don’t think we’ll be there long enough to make it worthwhile. How much time will we actually have in the lounge in that 2 hours?

If it's 2 hours from landing to take off, probably an hour to hour 20

Pointless waste of money for that amount of time.

Quite if he’s into T5 then it’s probably around 50 quid each. Total waste of money

You're better off buying a sandwich and a coffee in a quiet cafe up one end of the terminal.

You might get an hour in the lounge if you're arriving and departing into the same terminal, and none of the paid lounges in Heathrow are great shakes.

If booked with BA it'll be Terminal 5, if booked with ANA or JAL it'll be a transfer from 5 to 2 or 3. BA is the only airline to fly EDI to LHR and I'm pretty sure all of those go to T5.

You'll also be exiting the UK so you'll need to go through security again which can take up to 30 mins, at T5 or T2 you'll also be going to the far off gates to get on the larger planes.

I don't think he's going to have much time to spend in a lounge, probably not enough time enjoy a sandwich as boarding a large flight starts almost an hour ahead of scheduled departure.

There will be little time for more than a leisurely coffee.

Same terminal (T5)

I didn't realise we'd have to go through security again. That means even less time.

To be fair, security at Heathrow is usually pretty easy. 1/2 hour is the worst case.

The flights to Haneda usually leave from the B or C concourse, so you'll also need to take the transit system to the satellite terminal which will easily add another 10-15 mins.

If you're looking for excuses to tell the wife you shouldn't book the lounge, I'm sure we can come up with even more.

The paid lounge in T5 is a Plaza Premium; it's tiny and always rammed full of people with nowhere to sit. 1/5 stars, would not recommend.

You'll have a nicer time spending your money on a coffee, a drink or some food elsewhere if you have time.

Furthermore, your 2 hours assumes your EDI to LHR flight takes off on time.....

T5 connections security usually has no queue so it won’t cost you much time. I’m with the others don’t bother with a lounge. Your long haul will go from B or C gates so I’d get out to B gates and sit at the bar/cafe for half an or so, much quieter out there than the main terminal.

Edit: always take the lifts, much quicker than the escalators which are designed to spread and slow the flow of people. Or if you’re trying to convince your wife a lounge was a waste of money do it the other way….

Forget to tell her about the transit system and walk - that's another 5-10 mins, more if you need to go to C gates.
