Hi all

Off for a couple of weeks touring Northern France with the kids in the summer and was just thinking ahead to all those past times where I've pulled dutifully over to the booth and messed about with change/ cards. I thought I'd grab a tag for this chip and sail through the barriers.

Quick google reveals a bewildering array of companies offering the service and to be honest I'm totlly baffled. Is there one that's the best place to buy from? A government run one or something?

I won't be travelling outside of France during this trip, but maybe in the future

Any tips appreciated

I use an emovis tag and have done for a while, no issues. However they don't do Italy and when I looked into it last year I couldn't get a tag delivered to the UK that covered it. I can't remember which company it was but if I wanted to buy one for Italy I had to go to a physical store in France. Gave up in the end. Still the convenience of blatting through the plazas in France is a bit like a heated steering wheel, didn't know you had to have one until you bought one.

Not sure if it's the best, but I use the Emovis one. https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk/ . No complaints, took a little while to fully trust it, but that's a user problem, not the kit which behaved every time.

Emovis for me too - have used them for ten years or so.

The only issue for me is that they don't seem to work too well in my Morgan Aero 8 - I suspect because there's no gap in the heating filaments on the windscreen.

Emovis are a slick operation - speedy service and it works very well. Far quicker than the card/cash barriers.

+1 for emovis, I find their website and uk base have good service. When logged in its easy to see bills and reorder tags/mounting clips when I break them changing cars! Haven't used other providers but very happy with their price and service. It's great 'overtaking' cars in the tolls that passed me when mooching along towing our caravan.

I've been using a ATMB toll tag for the past 8 years. Only pay for the usage within the months that you use it. So if you go on holiday in June, you only have to pay for the month of June. Sign up is only in French, but I managed just fine with Google translate. Would also advise to use a fee free card like Starling.

For a bit of variety and balance, we use Bip&Go. https://www.bipandgo.com/en/

Works throughout France, Italy, Portugal and Spain for tolls and also a lot of parking places in France. You can use the fast toll booths where you don't drop below 30kph too (no idea if they all do this).

€1.70 per month you use it (+ tolls obviously) is the package we have.

Used to be called liber-t 'tag' now Emovis... Been using these for about a decade and can't praise the system highly enough. It costs about 8yoyos a yeasr to rent one but it's peanuts compared to the time it saves when blatting down the auto routes through france, especially at peak periods.

The 'how fast can you travel up to the gate before it opens game' is a constant source of amusement for my monkey brain.

That was the one I wanted for Italy but they wouldn't post it to the UK last time I looked.

They are brilliant, saves so much time vs queuing at the tolls. Never had an issue in 7 years

I just checked. I've been using my Liber-T (which became Emovis) tags for exactly 20 years, without any problems

As someone mentioned above, there is a moment of anxiety the first time you use it... will it work?! It will.

I seem to recall they need activating on the website/your account. I might be wrong, it's a while since I did it.

Yes, to confirm they need activating via your online emovis account. Just done it myself for a replacement tag. Also tells you the estimated tag battery life, however they are very good at contacting you if your tag battery is close to expiring.

We found it pretty painless to use - most of the time it activated automatically, well before we got to the barrier and had to stop. On a couple of occasions we got to the barrier and nothing happened, but fortunately no-one was behind and we were able to reverse and try again, when it worked fine.

Hopefully that won’t happen to us because my D4 will be dragging 7m behind it hehe

The trick for me was to make sure I held back from whatever was in front, but particularly anything tall (in the TVR, anything taller than an SUV...). I guess that gives the transmitter a sporting chance of picking up the transponder chip.
