Apparently Eurotunnel now class a Porsche Boxster as a "high vehicle" and charge more for it - obviously.

Whereas a 2023 Honda Civic (eg) which is larger in every direction isn't classed as a high vehicle.

I wonder why?

It is because of low ground clearance (this pops up on the eurotunnel booking page when i try to book for my 911):

Eurotunnel Booking Page said:
We have detected that your vehicle has low ground clearance or is exceptionally wide. To make sure you can be loaded easily we will allocate you space on a single deck shuttle.
The single deck shuttles have less steep ramps and wider roadway space.

Instead entering your registration or specific model you can just enter a type and size, which far cars is above or below 6 feet tall. But as above the entry ramps are quite steep, I assume the boxter isn't abnormally lacking in ground clearance though.

I recall previous threads where posters are recommending specifically asking for the single deck shuttle for Porsches etc to avoid any ramp trouble or wheel damage from the narrow roadway.
I suspect from so many requests (and maybe complaints) this is now standard policy for Eurotunnel.

I have just run a couple of Euro tunnel quotes, one for my 911 which comes up as needing single decker, the other for my Mercedes e class which does not come up as needing the single decker.
The prices are identical, so no mark up for the single decker use.

I agree, it if others with boosters and 911 have claimed clearance issues then I can see why eurotunnel just stick all that type of car in the single deckers.
They are not charging any premium for the single decker so what is the problem?

I just did a quote for my car and two saloons that are larger, mine costs more.

My 911 on the single decker is identically priced to my e class estate in the normal shuttle.

Do you seriously think Eurotunnel are doing this for free?

I have just tried quotes for 3 different travel dates. All come up with exactly the same cost for a Porsche on the single decker as a normal car in the double decker.
So yes, I do think they are doing this for free.

Maybe you paid more on both?

The quotes I have just done using reg numbers for 3 cars don't lie.

I've just tried and the LeShuttle site quotes me an extra £6 per crossing on my Porsche versus my BMW - on a cheap time crossing which is £65 without the addition.

Scrump, are you using the LeShuttle site, or via somebody else? Wondering if that is a way of avoiding additional costs?

Maybe I have got it wrong, feel free to try these two cars, both are larger and cheaper than my Boxster:

Honda - RA23ENV
BMW - YB61LZM

My e class estate is the same price as the 911. I have just tried Mrs Scrump’s Nissan note and it is £10 cheaper.
I tried the same crossing but not entering the reg or car type, just a car under 6ft tall and it comes up as the same price as the e class and the 911.

Those two come as the same price as the Nissan note, about £10 cheaper than the MB estate and the 911.

Ok, so you paid more for both than the normal price.

Weirdly if I try and get a quote for a car without knowing the type or reg, just enter a car under 6ft tall it quotes the £10 higher price.

Take one of them then. Or pay more for the Porsche if worth it.

Very intelligent response, well done.
