Napoli city centre isn't that fantastic IMO. Be a bit careful where you go and when, and what you have on show.

Go to Sorrento by (premium express) train, get the ferry back.
Consider hiring a car and driving the Amalfi coast.
Vesuvio / Pompei as you said.

Everything shuts down for a day or two a week, but everything shuts down for a different day, so make sure you plan in advance because you can see everything but may waste a lot of time if you try to wing it.

Have lunch outside in the sunshine at La Scialuppa next to the marina.

Don’t be put off by negative comments regarding Naples itself. It is a little rough around the edges but it’s a proper working Italian city and has bags of character. I’ve been quite a lot & never felt or experienced any issues there. Common sense should be used just as it should wandering around any UK town/city. It’s also really good value to eat & drink - even more so by comparison with the rest of the Amalfi coast.

Ravello, Positano & Amalfi itself are well worth a visit if you have time. The whole coastline is stunning.

The Amalfi coast is pretty spectacular, the Roman ruins are great too with a guide to point stuff out.

Take the train south to the Funivo del Faito cable car and go up the mountain. Great views.

Stayed in Naples for one night before a sailing holiday a couple of years ago. I have travelled quite a bit in Italy and elsewhere including 3 times to the Amalfi coast.

I went out to the terrasse of our hotel for breakfast and was gobsmacked by the view. The Bay of Naples is spectacular. We stayed at the Renaissance Hotel Mediterrano which has a stunning view over the bay towards Vesuvius. It was a Wow moment and one of my best memories from the whole holiday.

I have visited Naples several times over the last 50 years or so. It has only got worse, in fact I don’t think it can be saved. As others have said do the Almalfi coast, have a day or two on Capri, stay in some of the marvellous towns and villages on the coast but don’t bother with Naples.

Go south. If you like archaeology, there’s a place called Paestum which is incredibly impressive - many very well preserved temples and a great addition to Pompeii.

Naples can be rough. The Amalfi Coast is lovely, but quite restrictive. I’d recommend the Cilento coast. Authentic, overlooks the Amalfi coast/Capri and probably a lot cheaper. Agropoli is the area hub.

My recommendation: Don't. Stay somewhere else, like Sorrento.

Naples is a total hole. Go to the church with the statue of the Veiled Christ in it, because that is the only pretty thing in the city, then leave. Have a slice of margherita pizza at L'Antica di Michele, but don't expect it to be all that. Instead go to Caiazzo to have pizza at Pepe in Grani (book ahead, and take the earlier sitting) which is officially the best in the world. Go to Pompeii and spend a whole day there. Go to Herculaneum and spend half a day. Go to Sorrento, Positano, and Capri. All wonderful, beautiful places to spend a few hours.

Rent a car and pay for the extended insurance. Drive it like you stole it, for speed limits and white paint on the roads are simply for decoration. Only the ZTLs matter.

The train is full of pickpockets, and best avoided.

I love Naples.

I'd echo the comment about security - don't wear your Rolex there - but it is quite a special place. Some of it is quite opulent, some of it is crumbling. It is a microcosm of Italy.

No up-to-date restaurant advice sadly, because where is hot changes, but I have never had a bad meal when I have taken a recommendation from the hotel concierge (avoiding obviously the "our hotel restaurant Signore which he is obliged to mention first).

Certainly is.

Food, wine, history.

Stayed on edge of Storico Centro by main Uni. so everything easily accessible.
