going in the school summer holidays [teenage boys] or is that a crazy idea ?

A couple of times we’ve done our own thing. We did hotels. We did consider a campervan but the one way and mileage fees added up to quite a lot of money and the more popular campsites in the national parks get booked up a long way in advance.

Which parts of our Canada are you looking at visiting, it sounds like a daft thing to say but it’s a big place and the distances are huge.

Are you sticking around Ontario and maybe into Quebec or heading over to the west coast?

Toronto doesn’t really require a car unless you want to head out to Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake (which is a lovely little town). In fact driving in Toronto is a bit of a pain, they drive like yanks, very unbecoming :-)

Honestly Niagara Falls is a few hours worth of entertainment at that. They’re amazing but you’re not going to want to spend much time in the town itself, it’s a very odd place. If you’re heading off into Quebec or further west in Ontario maybe arrange to have a few days in Toronto after you land and then pick the car up from one of the downtown rental locations. That’s what we did last time we were there.

There are a couple of Canadians including at least one Torontan on the forums, hopefully he’ll spot your thread and be able to offer some age appropriate ideas for you and your family.

There are three obvious flydrive areas in canada, the west (calgary to/from vancouver across the rockies), Ontario and Quebec (Toronto/Niagra/Algonquin park/Ottawa/Montreal/Quebec City) and the east coast (Newfoundland/Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island). It goes without saying that Canada is BIG, so be prepared for some hours in the car.

It sounds like you fancy the second area which can be a good mix of cities and countryside. You can do the cities without a car, but if you want to see any countryside you need one.
Toronto is an archetypical North American City, Niagra Falls are stunning, the town around is not. I recommend doing the maid of the mist boat ride or going under the falls, the power is incredible close up. Algonquin Park is beautiful, but in the summer bring bug spray! I recommend finding somewhere to rent a canoe and getting out on a lake. Ottawa (where I live) has some good museums and parliment. Worth a day or two. You start to feel the french influence more in Montreal, and Quebec City is virtually European. If you have a car and time the drive past quebec city up the st Laurent is pretty and the whale watching from Taddousac is great.

Flew to Calgary back in October 2016, hired a brand new dodge Durango hemi engined truck which was wonderful, spent the night there then drove to Banff and stayed in the Banff springs hotel for 2 nights, continued to jasper for another 2 nights then stopped at a fairly remote log cabin overlooking a lake, then drove up to a place called echo Valley ranch which was incredible as we were the only 2 guests booked in so had complete free rein of the place, horse riding, shooting, flying, massages etc.
from there went to whistler and finally Vancouver then flew home.
It was truly the best holiday I’ve ever been on, cost a lot but would recommend every second of it!
Lovely people and stunning scenery!

How long are you coming for ? I'd suggest maybe 2 nights in Toronto , then fly to Calgary and head into the mountains . RVs are a great experience but campsites are busy in the summer holidays , and can get expensive along with national park passes etc ,

If you are after a bit of inspiration have a look at the Trailfinders routes.

https://www.trailfinders.com/holidays/canada-and-a...

If you chose to go with them they can arrange the whole lot or you could just use the maps as suggestions.

We did a route from Toronto, Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Montreal and then back to Toronto to fly home, we did drive down to Niagra from Toronto, the falls and boat trip beneath were nice but the place less so. IMO.

I have just booked for me and my wife to go west coast, Vancouver, Victoria on Vancouver island, Whistler, Sun Peaks, Jasper, Banff and fly back from Calgary, all with Trailfinders.

Done every Province bar nunavut. Done 2 10k+ road trips, and a dozen+ other holidays trips- it's a big place with lots to see. Understatement I know but you'll have some long days in the car if you're looking to move about a lot - we love road trips but they wouldn't suit younger kids I'd have thought.

Cape Breton, NS and Vancouver Island, BC are our favourite places. We're looking to retire to BC when the time comes.

Very similar trip to our last one. What’s the advantage to booking with trailfinders vs booking yourself?

Wife is 50 next year & we've debated all the destinations, she mentioned Canada this morning

We can fly Glasgow to Toronto in July 25, from there i'd like to see Niagara, then head into National Park terrority

What would you suggest ? I've just ordered the trail finders brochure, so hopefully that will give me some hints & tips
