Planning a short break in London next Feb with my wife. Booked to see the King and I and we are looking to spend a day at the Imperial War Museum. We want to stay somewhere reasonably priced (at least for London) and were looking at the Premier Inn Southwark (Bankside). Does anyone have experience of this hotel? Sounds like the location is reasonable for eating and drinking etc and not too far away from the main sites.

In addition, we would welcome any thoughts on "must do" sights for a few nights visit. We've done Tussauds and V&A a few years ago, and neither of us are mad art lovers....but other than that, open to ideas.

Thanks in advance.

I've stayed at that PI a few years ago. It's "okaaaay".

We really enjoyed a boat trip with a talk given by a "Lighterman". Great way to take in views, but maybe a bit chilly in February hehe

That hotel would do the job but doesn’t help getting to/from IWM or Tottenham Court Road on the tube - depends if you’re happy for a good walk or not.

It’s a broad old search but I’d be looking for top side of Covent Garden area or over into Bloomsbury - Holborn etc.

Would recommend a walk along Lower Marsh when going to/from the war museum as it seems quaint against a lot of what London is nowadays

Lower marsh is quaint? ROUPELL ST is quaint and is 2 minutes away hehe lower marsh just another street with shops imo.

Thanks all - thats good feedback. TBH I'm not expecting a Premier Inn to be special although I have found they can range from very good to poor despite all being to a fixed std (theoretically).

Like the idea of the river trip and happy to do plenty of walking (we both work outside so not unused to a bit of chilly weather!). Likewise helpful thoughts about Covent Garden and the walk to IWM.

Much appreciated!

Before we moved back to London, we used to always stay at the Drury Lane Travelodge when we came into town for nights out.

Central for everything, just round the corner from Covent Garden, pretty cheap considering the location, comfortable and a decent enough breakfast.

Getting to the IWM won't be a problem either.

hehe quaint perhaps not the best word - I was rushing back after lunch!

It’s lack of shiny shops and chains is refreshing through. Saying that I was last there two years ago while waiting for child #1 to arrive at st Thomas’ so it could have two prets and a scribbler on it by now…

Given how many hours I’ve spent in and outside the white hart I’m disappointed that I forgot it though!

We stayed there for our annual summer London trip for many years until 2022 when it had went downhill massively - even the more expensive upgraded rooms were filthy and tired and the carpets everywhere were a sticky stained mess.

Don't know what truth is in it but we were told it was used as a hostel during lockdowns and went downhill from there.

I'd check recent reviews before going back, as it needed a refurb.

We stayed at the Z Hotel in Holborn for a couple of nights this week. It is modern and VERY reasonably priced for London but the rooms are tiny. It's worth including in a price comparison.

I've been to the IWW a few times and each time we have tagged in the Belfast as well, definitely worth a visit.

Oh! frown

We moved back to London in 2016 so all our trips were before then. That's a shame as it was always ideal.

OP, maybe scrap that suggestion. hehe

We’ve stayed at the Hilton Double Tree at Ealing, just of the North Circ. Not a bad hotel - rooms a tad on the small side but expected for London. Good breakfast though and with on site parking for a fee.

We stayed to go be in the audience for The Last Leg at Wood Lane, which we walked to via a few pubs. The tube, just around the corner will get you into London. , which we used to visit the National Portrait Gallery.

I've got a night over up there tomorrow and staying in the Waterloo Premier inn, I've stayed in them for years an im not expecting more than 3 star which is the usual for PI/TL's.

I saw the Southwark option but felt a bit out of reach of Waterloo and is a bit more of a walk into the west end. One hotel I did going cheap at about 150 quid was the Hilton garden in Lambeth.

An Idea for you is the Sky Garden Fenchurch, need to get in early for bookings, im up there tomorrow and expecting some night sights.

Hi all,
Sorry for delay in reply - much appreciate all the inputs - particularly re Prem Inn and Travelodge. Some other options suggested there which I'll look into - thank you to all for your suggestions!
Cheers and compliments of the season!

The Waterloo one I stayed in was perfect for a night, couldn't fault it.

It was also handy to get to the city on the River although that was rather expensive.
