Easyjet appear to have changed some of their bundling and the extra legroom seats no longer come with a large cabin bag as part of the deal. We'd already thought we'd take at least one large suitcase on our next holiday, and this just confirmed it. However, when I costed up 2 one-way flights, 2 extra legroom seats and 1 small and 1 medium checked bag it was around £400 - Gatwick -> Chania (Crete). BA Business for Heathrow -> Chania is £496 for 2 people, and this includes 2 * 23Kg checked bags per person. Add in the fact that you can get a perfectly decent breakfast / brunch in the lounge, with Prosecco and still wine, as well as a meal on the plane with free booze and I would say that the additional £96 is pretty much accounted for. The last breakfast we had in the departure lounge at Gatwick was £65. You also get an empty seat between the 2 of you, so no-one you don't know sitting next to you and invading your space.

I'm just waiting for the return flights to be released before I figure out what to do on the way back.

I had thought that Easyjet with extra legroom seats might be more expensive than standard BA, I never thought it would turn out to be on a par with BA Business - and before anyone chips in, I know that short-haul Business class isn't really a big deal, but it is definitely better than Easyjet (assuming the flight leaves and arrives more or less on time)

It changed some months ago, and as BA standard economy tickets do still include a large cabin bag then they are often significantly cheaper than Easyjet with the paid for added cabin bag, and BA's tickets that include a checked bag are also often significantly cheaper than adding a checked bag with Easyjet - and you still get the large cabin bag with BA.

Interesting - I’m not really up on these things, but last month we had an easyJet package holiday for week in Turkey that my wife organised and I was quite surprised that the flight element cost £850. We didn’t get speedy checkin or whatever it’s called, which my wife thought we should have, but turned out they didn’t staff it anyway.

I thought easyJet flights were like £50!

..not any more. The debundling means we now fly short haul with only under seat bags.

I'm flying to Madeira in Feb, underseat bag only. £95 return. Add one hold bag and it becomes £195....
I'm then flying Malaga in May. £240 return, no baggage.

Malaga in May was round £160 not that long ago.

Learning to pack into one small "fk you Ryan air" bag. So named after we went to Carcasonne a couple of years back and refused to pay the crazy baggage charges.

Hilarious that BA BC comes in only £95 extra. Even short haul, and even ignoring the lounge access, champers etc, it will be worth every penny not to be in cattle with Easy or Ryan

Easyjet / Ryanair can make total sense if you only want the basic package. That means:

  • no checked baggage
  • no carry on baggage
  • no guarantee of sitting together
  • no fasttrack
  • no lounge
  • no check in
  • no extra legroom seat
If thats good for you then yes you can see sub 100 quid return fares. As soon as you start adding items from the above list the gap to a "full service" carrier rapidly drops.

I usually fly BA business down to Malaga simply because the premium over BA economy & Ryanair/Easy is really not that great in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah. Wish I'd checked but also booked flights for two chums who prob would not have also wanted BC. Will do a flight compare now to see what BA BC is like price wise. Mind you, I'm using BRS airport so BA won't offer that airport for sure.

Yep £421, or £101 using my avios. London Malaga return.

Saying that just realised I paid for three people to malaga with easjet so £150 each, no baggage. £65 to add a 15kg bag, return.

Also worth bearing in mind it doesn't always work like that.

Just checked our flight to Malaga at Christmas.... now 1150 each......yikes

I think Easy & Ryanair are still cheaper even with all the add ons!

Actually - I'm not sure the comparison I made holds true (or at least, it becomes pointless) if it's a package holiday. I asked my wife and she'd got the £850 by checking the same flights with 2 x 23kg bags per person etc as per the package but you'd probably never book that.

We haven't done a package holiday for years but the whole holiday was less than booking accommodation only with the hotel direct and she had a good go at them.

Basically this, I have found a flight to Albania for £11 with WizzAir (one way)

To choose your seat, bring bigger hand luggage etc you need priority boarding which was something like an extra £54 per person, each way.

Checked in luggage is also extra per item but at a discounted rate.

Budget airlines only work if you aren't fussed where you sit and bring hand luggage. Thankfully for me I can work around this

We have started to use BA for holidays instead of the likes of easyjet and jet2 as they are much cheaper.

We recently did a week in a nice self catering apartment in october half term with BA for £650 for two adults and a child. That included choosing our seats, carry on bags, hold bag each and a drink and snack on the plane.

The way they are gong the so called budget airlines will price themselves out of the market

I used Easyjet for Gatwick-Barcelona (two people) in June. The headline price that came up on flight comparison sites ended up bearing no relation to the eventual price, which was over £400. We ended up checking in a suitcase as hold luggage as this was cheaper than paying for a second cabin bag each.

The irony was that when we went through the boarding gate, the Easyjet lady checking passes wasn't really looking at what hand luggage each passenger had, and whether it matched what they'd paid for, and nor were the stewardesses at the plane door, so we probably could have just sneaked on the second cabin bags.

Maybe not entirely relevant, but my opinion of Easyjet wasn't improved by having both flights delayed by more than an hour, and the return landing being aborted when the wheels were almost on the ground (he got down on the second attempt). Also the plane's parking sensors failed, so the pilot couldn't park up against the movable corridor thing, and we got to walk down a staircase onto the tarmac, but I didn't mind that.

I have fond memories of flying to Marseille on Ryanair for a genuine £9 each way in 2017... we just accepted not sitting together and I managed to fit everything I needed for a few days into a messenger bag and the pockets of my coat. The fare from home to Stansted cost more than the flight, I think.

I'm flying BA to Tenerife for a month come middle of December.

£380 return for business out and economy return.

I'm flying both my kids over in Jan also on BA for £250 return all in.

In both cases the flights were far cheaper and at more convenient airports and times than the usual budget airlines.

Business opportunity - the 'flight coat' - its regular knee length coat but inside there are more pockets than you can shake a stick at ;-))

I often use the non-low cost airlines now and fly from bigger airports. I would rather pay a similar price and travel a little further to Heathrow than fly EasyJet from Bristol. My hate for Bristol airport and EasyJet pricing is pushing me back to traditional carriers.

Hadn't flown EasyJet for ages, we tend to choose our flights based on who fly's to where from East Mids but recently flew from Manchester to Bilbao with EasyJet and couldn't really fault it as long as you go in to it with your eyes open.
The headline price of £17 each obviously becomes £34 as we want to come back, then becomes £108 for the pair of us sharing a hold bag, but you can't really moan about £54 each return for a flight to Spain.
I had to repack MrsRace's side of the case, as the weight allowance was quite low, perfectly adequate for a 4 night city break but not if you plan on taking 25 outfits and a hairdryer rolleyes
As has been mentioned policing carry on seems to be none existent, I had a rucksack that didn't have that much in it but could have been full and no one would have said a word, but then I could have just worn all the clothes that were in it anyway. hehe
I can see how if you are traveling as a family for a week in the sun it can soon add up but for the short city break traveler it was good, will be checking the price against the big carriers next time though. scratchchin

The issue with easyJet is the headline price.

Picking Tuesday 13th February as a random midweek day for a flight from Gatwick to Malaga, then the easyJet flight at £38.99 is obviously cheaper than the the BA hand luggage only economy seat at £57.

But the BA price allows you two pieces of hand luggage, an under-seat bag and a full sized overhead locker cabin bag, whereas easyJet only allows the under-seat bag and if you want to take an overhead locker bag that will be £25.49 so now your total cost is £64.48 so more expensive than the BA flight.

And if you want to take a hold bag then easyJet will charge you a further £36.99, so you are now at £101.47 compared to the £78 that BA would have charged you for a seat with hand-luggage and a checked bag

AND the BA seat allows you to check in and select a seat 48 hours before your flight, which would be at least an additional £7.49 on easyJet taking their total cost to £108.96 compared to BA's £78.

Now I am no fan of BA but at least there is at least a little honesty in their pricing where you can see from the start whether you are paying £57 or £78 (or even £164 for business class), rather than the death by 1,000 cuts that you suffer with easyJet when they finally reveal the price to be an exorbitant £108.96.

EasyJet holidays is often worth a look if they’ve got the hotel you want on their list. They now give you 23kg of baggage and a transfer, which you didn’t get before, but obviously you’re under no obligation to take either.

Best deal I ever got from them was organising a stag do for 7 of us in Amsterdam back in 2019. Flights basically worked out as free versus the cost of booking the accommodation on its own. Bags were checked in on a family hands-free voucher (about £12 each way for 6!) and we got speedy boarding as well. I’m not surprised that’s now been stopped really.

It works the same with BA holidays as well. Its possible to unlock some good car hire rates or flight prices that are not available direct from BA. Went to the US a couple of years back & the flights & 10days car hire was around a third the price of booking the same flights alone direct with BA.
