Just wondering if anyone has any advice about getting from France to La Thuile in Italy in December?

I can't imagine driving through the St Bernard Pass from the French side this time of year is advisable even if it is open with a Saloon car even if it is equipped with Winter tyres.

So that leaves the Mont Blanc Tunnel - fine for coming back but it's not open until the 18/19 December and we are travelling on the 16th December.

So that leaves leaves driving into Switzerland and north of lake Geneva for a bit of a detour via Martigny and Aosta, is this the only sensible option?

After discovering this I thought flying would be easier but airport transfers from Geneve are ~£1400 return because of the Tunnel. Then from Turin it's almost as costly - and the train seems to take a very long time (Car hire is not an option at the moment - but appreciate it would be cheaper)

However I am now back at the driving option (driven to the French alps loads of times just not to the Italian ones) any suggestions given the above?

The St Bernand pass closed a couple of weeks back - currently skiable though!

We use this option, the st barnard tunnel will be open, its not much longer tbf, and a nice drive.

Other options are train to Geneva or Turin, then bus up.

Preferable to drive IMO.

Now looking at this again it looks better From Bourge-en-Bresse (probably going to stop there on the way)
Via Frejus Tunnel 513KM ~ 6hours
Via Grand-Saint-Bernard Tunnel 360km ~ 5 hours

what is the deal with driving on Swiss motor way these days - is it still a sticker at the board and a charge?

Ah, Bourg-en-Bresse. A stopover of ours when as a family we drove to Italy for the summer. We used to stop Hotellerie du Mas Pommier - typical French roadside hotel so a midden but the food was so, so good.
