Last time I flew there 5 yrs ago were lots of options, now at the cheaper end it's just China Southern or China Eastern & other options seemingly twice the price for the dates I'm after.

Are they terrible options?

Where to look?

What time of year? Does it coincide with Australian school hols? Summer? Easter? June/July?

Whilst we’re always in/out SYD there’s usually lots of choice all around the same price - it’s just that general price level that changes. Have never gone with a Chinese flight, always Singapore if I can - no idea if they do a BNE service though.

Is that direct to Brisbane? You'll probably find a lot more choice if you go via Sydney.

Economy? Yes they’re terrible. You really want to find a fare with one of the ME3 (Etihad, Qatar or emirates) or Cathay or Singapore if you can. If the prices to Brisbane are criminal have a look at flying with one of them via another major Aus city.

The Chinese airlines are the only ones flying over Russia at the moment whereas everyone else is having to go around and taking longer. Not sure if this also applies to flights to Australia but was certainly the case for flying to Japan when I was looking.

I think this is it. Also the Chineese airlines are very cheap at the minute.

I'm going to NZ this year. Got a fare under £850 return with China Eastern.
