Mrs B and I fancy some cheapish Goan winter sun and I'm looking for some hotel suggestions from the PH hive mind.

I've not been to Goa since 1981. Back then, Goa had very few hotels and I still had hair. I understand that now Goa is a very lively place.

We don't really want to do lively. In our dotage, we'd prefer a more laid back vibration.

Do you know of and can recommend a hotel that's tucked away in a quiet area, that can cater for old folk like me and Mrs B? But, within reach of whatever nightlife there is.

Maybe a boutiquey place? Access to the beach and/or a pool is essential. Other than that, we're easy.

Thank you for your help.

I was going to say Agonda too. Quiet, but enough "hotels" serving nice food, very relaxed, very few Russians or Israelis, very cheap beer etc. Would be where I went if I ever went back.

Coconut Creek Resort. Lovely Boutique hotel run by a Scottish lady and her Indian husband. Only about 20 rooms, with its own pool, bars and restaurant. Very quiet and relaxing resort in amongst coconut palms. No annoying poolside music. A short walk to the local village and Bogmalo beach, which is pretty empty and quiet on weekdays, but fills up with families at weekends. The beach bar and restaurant has nightly entertainment. The hotel will pick you up and drop you off from the airport with their own minibus and also organise transport if you want to venture afield. Nothing was too much trouble, exceptionally friendly staff.

Only downside, apart from the odd falling coconut, is that it's quite close to the airport, not that you hear the normal passenger aircraft, but Goa International shares the airport with Indian naval aviation and they tend to practise take offs and landings. Free military air shows just off the beach, but can be noisy when they operate.

Thanks for everyone's input. I really appreciate it.

We've booked a tent @ Elsewhere. It looks like something very different from our normal holiday.

Photos incoming next year.

We are in Goa the end of February, are the swimming pools warm enough then.

Goa starts off nicely warm over Christmas and New Year and gets gradually warmer towards the end of April/beginning of May when it can get quite hot. Then the monsoon arrives and cools everything down. Phew !

Pool temp should be fine. smile

Nearly a metre of rain in July ! eek

Monsoon in India is no joke. I've had to wade across the station to get the train in Mumbai before.

We're on our way next week.

One thing has popped up: Smog.

Although Mrs B's weather app doesn't mention it, mine says smog will be present most days.

We're 40 minutes' north of Goa. Will it be an issue?

Oh no sir, nothing but the whisper of a beautiful morning mist, thankyou sir (wobbles head)

There maybe poorer air quality in Panjim or Velha Goa, they're Indian cities after all but you'll be a long way from there. (40 minutes ?? Hang onto your hat biggrin)

Where are you flying into ? I hear there's a big new airport in North Goa which will be handy for you.
