We’re off to Barbados in November for a couple of weeks, and have hired a house on the beach north west of Bridgetown.

We’ve never been to to Barbados, or indeed anywhere in the Caribbean before, so any advice and local knowledge is much appreciated.

Ta in advance.

Head to Holetown. At opposite sides of the spectrum - Seacat - small local great food. Tides - high end, great sea views, fantastic food.

St Nicholas Abbey. Lovely and interesting colonial history.

Hunt's Garden. Fascinating.

Mount Gay distillery in the north (not the museum). Very interesting with rum tasting.

Fishpot restaurant St Lucy. Lovely coastline, great food.

Animal Flower Cave. Dramatic waves smashing in from the Atlantic.

Bathsheba beach on the east coast. Dramatic!! See above.

Tides restaurant for a special occasion.

The Cliff for celeb spotting but be prepared for ridiculous prices. However the attached QP bistro offers much better value for money and is magical in the evening when you can look down at the sea and watch tarpon swimming about beneath.

The west coast is brilliant for sunsets.

Thanks for the tips so far, chaps.

Any good restaurant suggestions for the Paradise/Brighton/Brandon’s beach areas?

Thanks for the timely thread. We are heading to Barbados on the 23rd October; only our second time out of Europe; the first being Saint Lucia 5 years ago.

We don't plan to do too many activities but good to know what's worth the effort. Definitely intending to do one of the rum tours.

Sandy Lane for Sunday brunch…
Hire a car for a few days, drive right round a couple of times…. Lots to see. Really enjoyed the monkey sanctuary - go in the late afternoon for the tortoise orgy… I kid you not.

Not sure which is the best tour but foursquare is by far the best rum and can be bought at the distillery for around $12 a bottle. You’d be paying 10x that uk retail if you can find it at all.

Supposed to be very overrated. But in fairness didn't go.

Ate there in May. Massively underwhelmed - the starter was 'decent' (but that's it), and my main (blackened fish, allegedly) was really (and I mean REALLY) bland. Yes they replaced it, but the replacement was no better than gastropub fare in the UK. You're paying for the views, the name, and that they now own the Cliff also, so (Lone Star aside) don't need to try.

Went here also. The steam-train trip is a con - lot of money for a short ride through nothing much to take you to a view point you can get to by car and a dozen chancer-street-traders already have, selling overpriced tat (that you can get at the airport for 1/3 cheaper).

What is good:-

Went here. Better than expectations. Food portions good and actually pretty decent food, which it doesn't have to be. Plenty of loungers in good condition with cushions on them. Good service too. Boat trip short and sweet but it's free if you can get on it, and it does take you out to one of the wrecks.

- Cariba restaurant just down from The Cliff. Unassuming family-run place that makes possibly the best food we've tasted in the Caribbean.
- Beach in front of Surfside. Tarpon and Stingrays literally yards from the beach.
- Heywoods beach. Best off-the-beach snorkelling of the holiday. Stay straight in front of the parking lot, head straight out, just left of the metal marker-pole, then swing around clockwise to come back in.
- Silver Moon cruises. Small, personal boat, good food, good crew.
