Any suggestions for a weekend break in December?

Normally we’d do a City break abroad, but this time I’m just think of somewhere closer to him - ideally a small boutique hotel with good food and maybe a nice town within walking distance for a bit of variety.

We are based in Kent, so don’t want to be travelling to the other end of the country, but happy to drive a decent distance.

As I’m typing this, I’m thinking Bath might be a possible option?

Bath is a fantastic suggestion, just avoid the Christmas market unless you fancy paying £40 for a wooden tie and a hot dog.

Great boutique hotel - eightinbath.co.uk

Happy to give a load of food & drink recommendations.

Hotel Bristol in Le Touquet. Abroad, but not a city break and almost on your doorstep

Bath is nice. How about Oxford or Cheltenham? If you want somewhere smaller town wise, stay at the Lygon Arms in Broadway.

I hadn’t thought about France, but I guess it’s a fairly short drive to Le Touquet from Calais, and by forgoing the Flexiplus ticket, the journey cost would ‘only’ be around £220, as I could probably get there and back on a single charge.

Out of interest, why Le Touquet and why that particular hotel?

Hotel looks nice - I guess parking will be difficult in most places in Bath.

Nice little town to wander around, good market on Saturday morning, super beach if it’s not too cold, limited but up-market shopping for Parisian visitors, some good restaurants including Pérard’s for seafood. Hotel has secure enclosed car park in the middle of town (book parking in advance, just in case). Eurotunnel terminal has EV charging

Or, if you want to splash out, Hotel Westminster in Le Touq’. Also secure parking, Michelin-starred restaurant, but not boutique - part of upscale La Barrière group

Not really, you might not get right to the door but there's a car park 3 min walk away.

Lygon Arms Hotel in Broadway...... If the weather is nice the place is stunning.

Cotswold towns of Stow-on-the-wold, Chipping Camden and Moreton-in-the-marsh, Cheltenham all local for visits. Other nice places to see are Sudely Castle (Catherine Parr's burial place), Daylesford amongst many!!

There are some brilliant hotels just south of Calais. We stayed at the Hotel Atlantic in Wimereux which is about thirty minutes to the tunnel.

Fantastic rooms and views and great food too.

How about a Christmas market in Cologne or Colmar?

As you're Kent based you can be in Bruge quickly enough. December in Bruges is fantastic. We go in December pretty much every year (including this year). Get's the festive season well underway.

I was thinking more of secured private parking, rather than public parking, but point taken!

We’ve visited the Cotswolds recently, so would prefer somewhere different.

Too far to drive for a weekend trip, and we don’t want to fly anywhere this time.

A bit further afield but I recently stayed at the Buxton Crescent Hotel and it was lovely:
