Hi,

I’ve just got back from Seville which I loved and which I plan to visit again next year, because there’s still a few more thing I would like to visit.

However, I’m planning a trip to Alicante next year in May, but I would like to avoid english pubs, restaurants and football shirt wearing types! I’ve seen some hotels in the centre of Alicante city and calpe which look nice.

Will I avoid that or should I visit Valencia. Ideally I would like to visit somewhere that has plenty of restaurants to choose from to sit down and have a few drinks in the evenings. During the day relax by pool/beach or mooching around small boutique shops with my wife.

Is there anywhere along the coast that can provide that?

I think you'll find it difficult to avoid everything on your list. Calpe is very nice; climb the rock, if it's your thing - amazing views (gratuitous picture attached) and it's not massively English. The be is grey there, rather than Sand-coloured! Alicante is a lot busier, but there are some nice places to eat. Santa Pola is nice too. A friend used to go to Moraira a lot and said that wasn't touristy. Altea isn't touristy either but there are fewer places to eat.

We have a home in Moraira and have spent many happy weeks there since our honeymoon in 2000.

A lovely place with great bars and restaurants and a laid back atmosphere.

Definitely a hidden gem, really like the place, it’s definitely somewhere I could live

Been a couple of times now after a friend whose wife’s family have a place there put me onto

Worryingly his wife’s sister has an estate agency there laugh

I have a place about 10km north of Alicante. We‘re big fans of the region and feel some places give it all a bad name.

You‘ll avoid all of that staying in Alicante city centre and there are countless bars and restaurants to choose from. The beach in the city is pretty small, but it will be quiet in May. A few km out of Alicante is Playa de San Juan and Playa Muchavista. Between them they are a continuous 7km beach. In Playa de San Juan there is an area called Pau 5 that‘s got plenty of trendy bars and restaurants. Not many hotels, but lots of AirBnBs.

North of Playa Muchavista you have a fishing town called El Campello. The beach there is over a km long and is lined with bars and restaurants (one is nominally English) and there are plenty more in the town. There‘s a 4 star hotel (El Gallo Rosso) with a pool a couple of hundred meters from the beach and a nice boutique place on the beach (called Jova), but no pool.

Bear in mind that the weather can be a bit hit and miss at that time of year. Hotel pools may not be open.

If you go for one of those options, happy to recommend bars and restaurants if you tell me what you‘re looking for.

As others people have said Moraira would be perfect. It’s a great little town with nice restaurants and beaches particularly one called Playa de La Fustera which happens to have a cool bar/restaurant right beside it.

Altea old town is well worth a visit or two if you’re looking for restaurants, and it has plenty of great shops to mooch around. It has a real buzz about it in the evening. My favourite place to eat there is El Castell.

There’s also Javea which is quite a bit further away from Alicante but again a great town with a mixture of older areas and a more touristy beach zone. You can’t go wrong with any of them but I’d always choose Moraira.

Oh, and May is the time I usually visit the area (I have relatives there so I’ve been many times) as it’s always around 24/25c and not too busy. Just perfect.
