Car rental recommendations- Split Croatia
Discussion
Booked a trip to Split in Croatia Oct ‘23. We were going to get a transfer from the airport but like to have the flexibility of further travel and road trips so considering a rental car - would appreciate previous experiences good or bad & the recommendation of a reputable hire company.
Also road trips / areas not to be missed within a reasonable distance of Split (areas of natural beauty top of the list!)
Thanks in anticipation.

Can't help with the car hire as it was a while ago but I'd recommend:
- Krka lakes national park (45 min drive from memory)
- Trip up to Zadar one evening (sea organ, dinner in old town)
- Spending a day on Brac - drinks by the harbour in Milna, the viewpoint toward Hvar and Zlatni Rat beach
- Day on Hvar (take the foot ferry)

Definitely don’t book with Avia - nothing but a bunch of crooks who will add charges on at every opportunity. Apparently they need a “police report” even for a minor scratch.
Our flight to Zadar was delayed by 3 hours and although they had our flight details (they denied it); as it was outside of their 59 minute grace period, they demanded a €40 additional amount then told they didn’t have any cars in our group so wanted a further €154.
Told them to stuff their car and went elsewhere. Other people on our flight had exactly the same problems and the staff were very aggressive.
Avoid at all costs.

Stick with the more established car rental companies. I've used Enterprise and Sixt in Zagreb before with no issues - they seem quite fair. Also, I found that booking a car 1-2 weeks before you need it is the sweet spot in terms of deals - as long as you aren't in peak tourist holiday season.
Split airport has a handful of rental companies with offices in the terminal. Mainly big names. Always book with one of them and not the ones that don’t have an office in the terminal, as it’ll be a long walk to their office (we’ve made that mistake in the past!).
Alamo/enterprise are both good in split.
Carwiz is ok, although interiors can be messy/smoky.

And for another opinion.........
We did Split just before Covid and its fantastic, highly recommended and we'll be back
Our flight landed late and so we booked a private transfer which was actually pretty reasonable
The passenger ride downtown confirmed my suspicions that Croatian driving is like London multiplied by a significant scary factor
Whilst in Split we took a number of taxis which were all very reasonable
Same on Hvar
Hell, we even took the bus once which is probably worth a PH ban
Have a great holiday
Little thread ressurection. Just finished our Splti car hire with Avia. Was great. Super car, upgraded. They were uber thorough with checking ove the car before and after. I took plenty of photos. I used my own isurance. They were no problem at all.
On the other hand, I witnessed yet another unprepared family fuming over the 1100 euro deposit demanding proof they will be refunded etc.
Go prepared, they were fine, and the car was superb.
